Jeff Ruby winner Endlessly back in training with McCarthy

Barbara D. Livingston
Endlessly, who hasn't raced since July, is currently jogging for trainer Michael McCarthy.

Endlessly, a four-time stakes winner who was ninth in the Kentucky Derby last May, recently returned to trainer Michael McCarthy’s stable at Santa Anita for an expected return to racing in the spring.

McCarthy said earlier this month that Endlessly has been jogging in recent weeks.

“We’ve got a long way to go there” to be ready to run, McCarthy said.

Owned by John and Jerry Amerman, Endlessly was fifth in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby on turf at Aqueduct in July in his last start. Last March, Endlessly won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.

J B Strikes Back wins the Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes at 16-1. He will target the Santa Anita Handicap on March 1.

J B Strikes Back, the former maiden claimer who scored an upset win in the Grade 2 Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, will miss the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25 in favor of a California-based campaign, trainer Doug O’Neill said.

“It was coming back too quick,” O’Neill said of the decision to skip the $3 million Pegasus World Cup. He also cited cross-country travel for a reason to keep J B Strikes Back in California.

O’Neill said the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at 1 1/4 miles on March 1 is a possibility.

Miles Ahead (outside) bested Montalcino (inside) in the Thanksgiving Classic and now points toward the King Cotton at Oaklawn.

The rematch isn’t on. Miles Ahead and Montalcino, separated by a head in a fast renewal of the Thanksgiving Classic, are headed in separate directions.

Both horses are stabled at Fair Grounds, which has a large hole in its stakes program, as the Thanksgiving Classic at the opening of the meet is the only open dirt sprint stakes race for older horses during a season that spans more than four months.

Eclipse finalist Johannes sidelined with bone bruising

Johannes wins the San Gabriel Stakes in his 2024 finale on Dec. 26. He likely won't race again until the summer.

Johannes, a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding turf horse of 2024, has been sidelined with a minor injury, trainer Tim Yakteen said on Friday.

“We’ve run into some bone bruising,” Yakteen said. “We’ve always put the horse first, as we do all our horses.

“We’ll give him a little bit of a break and set him up for his summer campaign.”

Yakteen said he received the diagnosis from veterinarians on Friday. The setback ends plans to take Johannes to Gulfstream Park for the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational on Jan. 25.

Kelly Brinkerhoff
Several barns on the Santa Anita backstretch suffered wind damage Tuesday and Wednesday. Air quality was the primary concern on Thursday morning.

Santa Anita has postponed Friday’s program to Thursday,  Jan. 16 because of concern over air quality caused by massive wildfires in Los Angeles County, the track announced on Thursday.

The 10-race program scheduled for Friday will be conducted without being redrawn, according to track general manager Nate Newby.

“The [California Horse Racing Board] has given us approval to move the card as is,” Newby said in an interview. “It’s going to be a 10-race program starting at noon.”
