Alabama Stakes is Salty's chance to shine

Barbara D. Livingston
Salty, under Joel Rosario, wins the Gulfstream Park Oaks by 4 1/4 lengths.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Mark Casse had to have a smile on his face when he examined the field for Saturday’s Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga and did not see the name Abel Tasman among the nine 3-year-old fillies entered Wednesday for the prestigious 1 1/4-mile race.

“I think we can give her a run for the money, but it doesn’t hurt my feelings she’s not there,” Casse said Wednesday morning, hours before the Alabama field was drawn.

Proctor's Ledge faring better than her trainer ahead of Lake Placid Stakes

Debra A. Roma
Proctor's Ledge breezed four furlongs over the Oklahoma turf course on Aug. 11 in preparation for the Lake Placid.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Brendan Walsh is less sound today than he was going into his memorable victory with Proctor’s Ledge in the Grade 3 Lake George earlier in the Saratoga meet. Fortunately, his steadily improving 3-year-old filly is just fine, and will be a major player when she returns against five rivals in Saturday’s Grade 2 Lake Placid here.

Walsh, who has the majority of his stable in Kentucky, fractured his collarbone in a riding mishap at Churchill Downs not long after Proctor’s Ledge gave him his first Saratoga winner on July 21.

He Will (left) finishes second by a head to My Italian Babbo in the California Dreamin' Stakes.

Belvoir keeping options open for Gold Rush Dancer

Reed & Erin Palmer Photography/Emerald Downs
Trainer Vann Belvoir has not yet decided where decisive Longacres Mile winner Gold Rush Dancer will start next.

Gold Rush Dancer earned a career-best 97 Beyer Speed Figure for his blowout win in the Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs Sunday.

With Evin Roman aboard, the 4-year-old son of Private Gold took control of the race going down the backstretch, and the only question was how far he was going to win by when he hit the six-furlong mark four lengths in front. The final margin was 4 3/4 lengths.

Trainer Vann Belvoir, who won the Mile as a jockey when it was held at Yakima Meadows in 1995, wasn’t sure where Gold Rush Dancer would make his next start.
