SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Book’em Danno, the Grade 1-winning New Jersey-bred sprinter, was entered Saturday for next Friday’s $500,000 Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town, but will be cross-entered Sunday in next Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga, trainer Derek Ryan said.

Appleby preps Measured Time, Silver Knott for Sword Dancer

Measured Time will join his Charlie Appleby-trained and Godolphin-owned stablemate Silver Knott for next week's Sword Dancer.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The powerful Godolphin-Charlie Appleby team is likely to send out both Measured Time and Silver Knott, recent stakes winners at Saratoga, in the Grade 1, $750,000 Sword Dancer Stakes on Aug. 24.

On Friday, the pair each put in a workout over the Oklahoma turf course. Measured Time, winner of the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes on June 8, went a half-mile in 50.29 seconds, according to Daily Racing Form, outfinishing workmate Bold Act while getting his final quarter in 24.07 seconds.

Brown works Unmatched Wisdom a day early for Travers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With only three starts under his belt, Unmatched Wisdom will be the least experienced runner of the eight 3-year-olds expected to be entered Sunday in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes to be run here on Aug. 24.

But with a perfect 3-for-3 record and the services of leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time, he could be one of the more intriguing runners in the field.

Unique Power draws the rail, gets tough test in debut

Unique Power drew the rail for his debut Saturday at Del Mar.

Unique Power, the impeccably-bred 2-year-old colt, worked a fast half-mile in 46.40 seconds at Del Mar on Aug. 11 in advance of his debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs on Saturday.

Unique Power will start from the inside post in a field of six and will need to show speed to secure an early position. Unique Bella seems to have that ability, trainer John Sadler said on Friday.

“It’s kind of a tough post,” Sadler said. “He’ll have to break really well.

Jockey Alsagoor to miss at least three weeks

Jockey Abdul Alsagoor said on Friday that he hopes to resume riding at Del Mar in early September after sustaining a shoulder injury when he was unseated shortly after the start of a race last Sunday.

Alsagoor sustained the injury when the 3-year-old colt Brunchandcrunch veered toward the inside and struck a temporary rail shortly after the start of a maiden race at six furlongs.

“He ducked away” from me, Alsagoor said. “He did it really quick.”

Talamo gets his chance; will take over on Senor Buscador

Senor Buscador will get a new jockey in Joe Talamo for the Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar.

Senor Buscador, winner of the $20 million Saudi Cup in February, will have a new rider when he starts for the first time since March in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 24.

Joe Talamo has been working Senor Buscador in recent months, and will replace Junior Alvarado. Trainer Todd Fincher said on Friday that Alvarado has obligations at Saratoga on Aug. 24, a day with five Grade 1 stakes at that track including the Travers Stakes for 3-year-olds.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With nine winners from his first 22 starters here thus far this summer, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is having himself a whale of a Saratoga meet. But next Friday, his sights will be set on Charles Town, where he’ll send a handful of his troops to compete in stakes, including both defending champion Skippylongstocking and 2023 Wood Memorial winner Lord Miles in the $1 million Charles Town Classic.

Numerous Belmont at the Big A stakes offer Breeders' Cup berths

Two weekends, one in late September and another in early October, will offer numerous opportunities to win free berths into Breeders' Cup events.

The New York Racing Association will offer 50 stakes worth $10.35 million in purses at the 31-day Belmont at the Big A fall meet which runs Sept. 13 through Nov. 3.

With the ongoing construction at Belmont Park, this will be the third year that the Belmont Park fall meet is being conducted at Aqueduct.

Del Mar alters first post times

Beginning this week, Del Mar will begin their Friday's cards at 3 p.m. Pacific.

Del Mar is altering first post times on Fridays beginning this weekend. Racing will begin at 3 p.m. Pacific instead of 4 p.m. through Sept. 6.

Later this month, the track is moving forward post times on other days. Beginning on Aug. 31, racing will start at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays through the end of the season on Sept. 8.

Earlier post times will allow the track to run additional races before sunset.

Jockey Orozco facing months of recovery time after spill

Northern California jockey Irving Orozco faces months of recovery after sustaining broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and spinal fractures in a one-horse spill at the Sonoma county fair in Santa Rosa on Sunday.

Orozco was aboard Strength of Autism when the 3-year-old gelding fell in the stretch while racing in second. Strength of Autism was not racing near other runners when he fell.

“It happened so fast,” Orozco said. “It didn’t give me time to react. It was one of those things. Stuff like that rarely happens.

“I’m glad it wasn’t any worse.”
