Baffert will let Drefong dictate schedule ahead of Breeders' Cup Sprint

Ronnie Betor
Drefong may train up to the Breeders' Cup Sprint from his victory in Saturday's Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga.

Trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday that he will wait to see how Drefong trains following his victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga before deciding whether to train him up to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint or run him once more beforehand.

Last year, Drefong won the King’s Bishop on Aug. 27 at Saratoga and didn’t run until the BC Sprint, a race he won as part of a 4-for-4 campaign that culminated with an Eclipse Award as champion sprinter.

West Coast possible for Pa. Derby, or Jockey Club Gold Cup

Ronnie Betor
West Coast won his fourth straight race with the Travers on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - West Coast’s dominant 3 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes only further muddied an already jumbled 3-year-old picture, with fall plans unclear for him and many of his vanquished.

West Coast was due to return to California on Monday. Later this week trainer Bob Baffert and owner Gary West will meet to discuss what might be next for West Coast, who went gate to wire under Mike Smith in the Travers for his fourth consecutive victory.
