Abel Tasman works five furlongs in 1:00.40 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – An impressive five-furlong team work by Abel Tasman on Sunday morning at Santa Anita reestablished the Kentucky Oaks winner as a major player for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Abel Tasman did it the right way Sunday. She broke off about five lengths behind a workmate, relaxed comfortably, and blew past her rival inside the furlong pole. Abel Tasman was timed in 1:00.40. More importantly, she did it professionally.

“That was good,” trainer Bob Baffert said moments after the 9 a.m. workout. “She sat behind that horse.”

Mo Town may have a future on turf

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Mo Town rolled to a 6 1/2-length allowance win in his first start on turf Thursday at Belmont Park.

ELMONT N.Y. – Mo Town, one of the major disappointments of the 3-year-old division on dirt this year, may have found a new home on the turf.

In his first start on turf, Mo Town rolled to a 6 1/2-length allowance win Thursday at Belmont Park. It was his first victory since he won the Grade 2 Remsen at Aqueduct last November. Off the Remsen, Mo Town was among the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby. But disappointing efforts in the Risen Star at Fair Grounds and the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct took him off the Derby trail.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Friday was another busy morning for Breeders’ Cup candidates at Santa Anita. For the next two weeks, it will stay that way.

“They’ll get a chance to gallop over the [Del Mar] track Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday” during Breeders’ Cup week, trainer Peter Eurton said Friday after Champagne Room worked a bullet half-mile at Santa Anita.
