HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Jorge Navarro said that up until 7:30 on Sunday morning, he really didn’t want to run Sharp Azteca in the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational. But that all changed in less than two minutes, the time it took Sharp Azteca to work five furlongs in 59 seconds and gallop out like a freight train over his home base at Gulfstream Park West.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though the year came to a premature end with the cancellation of Sunday’s card, it had no impact on who the leaders were in several categories at New York Racing Association tracks in 2017.

Irad Ortiz Jr. led all jockeys on this circuit in victories with 296, more than 100 wins ahead of runner-up Manny Franco (184), Jose Ortiz (181), John Velazquez (121), and Javier Castellano (119). Irad Ortiz Jr., who also led all riders in wins in 2014 and 2015, also led in purse money won in 2017 with $19,767,044.

Ippodamia's Girl targets Providencia Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Ippodamia’s Girl will be on a race-a-month schedule for early 2018 after winning her stakes debut in Sunday’s $85,320 Blue Norther Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.

Trainer Mike Puype said Monday he wants to keep Ippodamia’s Girl on turf through the year, with an emphasis on the lucrative races for the 3-year-old filly division this summer.

Puype said the $75,000 Sweet Life Stakes on the hillside turf course Feb. 11 and the $75,000 China Doll Stakes at a mile March 10 will be considered in advance of the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes on April 7.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The Abbondanza Racing partnership, a group of friends from the Del Mar area, has an annual draft of racehorses at the Kentucky sales each November.

There are no fantasies involved.

In November 2016, the group bought Goodyearforroses for $200,000. In her first start for Abbondanza, Goodyearforroses won the Grade 3 Robert Frankel Stakes a month later at Santa Anita.

Giant Expectations pointing to Pegasus World Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Peter Eurton said that Giant Expectations, the upset winner of the San Antonio on opening day Dec. 26, would make his next start in the $16 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 27 after securing a spot in that field. He will use one of the three spots the Stronach Group, the owner of Gulfstream Park, purchased to fill out the 12=horse starting gate.

“When he gets his trip, he’s plenty good,” Eurton said Sunday.

Cool Bobby knocked off Derby trail by ankle injury

ARCADIA, Calif. – Cool Bobby, one of the top Kentucky Derby prospects on the West Coast, is off the Derby trail after undergoing surgery for a chip in his left front ankle, trainer Peter Eurton said Sunday at Santa Anita.

Cool Bobby would have been one of the top contenders in the Grade 3, $100,000 Sham Stakes on Jan. 6. But two days after his most recent workout, at Santa Anita on Dec. 15, "he had a little heat," Eurton said.

"We took a picture – bingo," Eurton said.

Gun Runner, Seeking the Soul drill for Pegasus World Cup

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Gun Runner is expected to be a heavy favorite in the Pegasus World Cup.

Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner put in a major work at his Fair Grounds base Sunday as he continues preparations for the $16 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park.

Also working at Fair Grounds for the Pegasus was Clark Handicap winner Seeking the Soul. The Grade 1 Pegasus is a 1 1/8-mile race.

Gun Runner drilled six furlongs in company in a bullet 1:10.60, with Fair Grounds clockers catching him galloping out seven-eighths in 1:24.40 and a mile in 1:39.20.
