Ankle chip will delay Caledonia Road's 2018 debut

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Caledonia Road has resumed jogging after surgery to remove an ankle chip.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Caledonia Road, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and a top contender for the Eclipse Award in that division, which was to be announced Thursday night, is “about a month behind” getting set for her 3-year-old debut after having surgery to remove a small chip from a front ankle, trainer Ralph Nicks said Wednesday morning at Gulfstream Park.

Gun Runner will be retired to stud duty at Three Chimneys Farm following his final start in Saturday's $16 million Pegasus World Cup.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Steve Asmussen was only partly kidding when asked to reminisce about Gun Runner being retired to stud after the Pegasus World Cup is run Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

“Nooooooo!” Asmussen said.

Mokat retired, will be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Mokat, winner of the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap in 2016, has been retired from racing due to an ankle issue.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Mokat, a Grade 2 winner that occasionally ranked among the top grass fillies in California, has been retired from racing, trainer Richard Baltas said this week.

The 5-year-old mare, winner of the San Clemente Handicap in 2016 at Del Mar and runner-up in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine in 2017 at Santa Anita, was intended to race this year at age 5. However, recurring ankle problems flared up again after she worked Jan. 13 at Santa Anita, and Baltas called off the comeback.

Quarantine lifted at Laurel Park barn

The Maryland Department of Agriculture lifted the quarantine of Barn 20 at Laurel Park on Tuesday evening after the horse English Tudor tested negative for the equine herpesvirus, according to Georganne Hale, vice president of racing for the Maryland Jockey Club.

"I received a call tonight from Dr. Stevens of the Maryland Department of Agriculture that English Tudor had tested negative," Hale said. "Barn 20 at Laurel Park has been released from the quarantine."

Multi-millionaire Russell Road dies of colic at age 12

Ten-year-old Russell Road will try to capture his fourth Confucius Say victory Saturday at Charles Town.

Russell Road, one of only two West Virginia-breds to earn more than $2 million, died last weekend of colic at age 12, according to James W. Casey, who trained him for nine seasons.

Russell Road went over $2 million in earnings in his final career start, the $100,000 Northern Panhandle Stakes at Mountaineer Park in August 2016. He came out of that race with a "little suspensory pull," according to Casey and was retired the next month when it was determined that he would not sufficiently recover to continue racing.

Bolt d'Oro slated to work Saturday for San Felipe Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – The most highly anticipated three-furlong workout of the California winter season will take place Saturday at Santa Anita, where Bolt d’Oro is scheduled for his first timed drill of 2018.

A pulled muscle in late December interrupted training for Bolt d’Oro, the Mick Ruis-owned and -trained colt who is a leading candidate for the Kentucky Derby after a 2-year-old campaign that included two Grade 1 wins and a third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

NEW YORK – The New York State Gaming Commission on Monday upheld the penalties of a 15-day suspension and $1,000 fine assessed to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott by the New York stewards for the finding of an overage of the therapeutic drug Flunixin (banamine) in a horse Mott raced at Belmont Park in 2014.

Gun Runner goes half-mile in final Pegasus prep

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – He broke no watches in the final official workout of his outstanding career, but Gun Runner was eye-catching nonetheless, turning in a maintenance half-mile breeze in 49.14 seconds Monday morning at Gulfstream Park as the expected odds-on favorite in Saturday’s $16 million Pegasus World Cup.

With exercise rider Angel Garcia aboard, Gun Runner was permitted to train before the rest of the local population immediately after the 7-7:30 a.m. renovation break, and had the track to himself.

No Laurel or Belmont shippers allowed at Oaklawn

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn announced Sunday that horses from Belmont Park and Laurel are banned from shipping in until further notice due to positives for the equine herpesvirus at those tracks.

Pat Pope, racing secretary at Oaklawn, said the ban does not include horses already at Oaklawn who last raced at Belmont or Laurel, because their arrival dates do not fit the timeline of the recent positives in New York and Maryland.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – X Y Jet continues to give every indication he’s cycled back to his peak form of two years ago after drawing off to a convincing 5 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Sunshine Millions Sprint.

The performance impressed just about everyone in the crowd, including trainer Chad Summers, who has been keeping a close eye on a horse he believes could be the chief competition for his top sprinter Mind Your Biscuits in the Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 31.
