Blue Bahia okay after scary stumble

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Emotions ran from low to high for trainer Jason Servis during the course of the day Saturday.

In the sixth race, Servis watched in horror as his Blue Bahia took a bad step, stumbled badly, and appeared to have possibly broken down while moving readily to the lead near midstretch while en route to an apparent victory in the Ladies Turf Sprint. Two hours later, Servis was in the winner’s circle following Rainbow Heir’s impressive two-length victory in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint while bearing good news about his filly.

World Approval remains on target for Tampa Stakes

World Approval, the 2017 Eclipse champion for top turf horse, remains on target for his 6-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Tampa Stakes, part of the Feb. 10 Sam Davis undercard.

Trainer Mark Casse is looking to use the $175,000 Tampa as a springboard to the $6 million Dubai Turf on March 31 at Meydan. John Velazquez will be in from Gulfstream to ride World Approval in the 1 1/16-mile Tampa.

“He looks good and is ready to go,” Casse said. “We’re looking forward to another big year with him.”

Catholic Boy drills five furlongs in Sam F. Davis Stakes prep

Catholic Boy will enter the Sam F. Davis Stakes next month off his win in the Remsen.

Catholic Boy, who looms a solid favorite in the Feb. 10 Sam F. Davis Stakes, had his third breeze since winning the Dec. 2 Remsen when going five furlongs Saturday at Tampa in 1:01 in company with his older stablemate March.

Catholic Boy schooled in the Tampa paddock Friday afternoon after shipping in from his base at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala.

“It all went extremely well,” said Jonathan Thomas, who trains Catholic Boy for Robert LaPenta. “He galloped out in 1:14 and 1:28. It was a good, methodic breeze. March has been good company for him all along.”

Jockey Gallardo escapes injury in spill, but R Kinsley Doll euthanized

Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo escaped serious injury in a spill Sunday and is expected back this week after taking off the remainder of his mounts following the incident.

Gallardo reportedly suffered leg bruising when thrown to the dirt near the quarter pole in the second race by R Kinsley Doll when the 5-year-old mare suffered a catastrophic injury.

R Kinsley Doll, a winner of two Florida Sire Stakes events at Gulfstream Park as a 3-year-old in 2016, had to be euthanized. She earned $315,553 from 18 starts for owners Richard Averill and Silver Oak Stable.

Bizarre stumble leaves jockey briefly on another horse

Jesus Castanon was all turned around – literally.

For a few incredible moments early in the eighth race Friday at Tampa Bay Downs, the 44-year-old jockey found himself facing backward while seated on the rump of a rival horse after being dislodged from his mount, Zouzou, who stumbled badly as the 3-2 favorite in a $16,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

“It felt like I was living in slow motion,” Castanon said Monday.

Rye's stakes win continues strong run for Morey stable

ARCADIA, Calif. – From his first graded stakes win to the richest win of his career, trainer William Morey celebrated two major milestones on consecutive Saturdays in January at Santa Anita.

Morey won his first graded stakes with Coniah in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes on Jan. 20. On Saturday, Morey won his richest race when Rye prevailed by a head in the $200,345 Unusual Heat Turf Classic.

The rest of the stable is winning, too. Through Sunday, the 20th day of the winter-spring meeting, Morey had won with 9 of 15 starters.

Castellano to ride Bolt d'Oro in San Felipe Stakes

Javier Castellano will be in the irons when Bolt d'Oro makes his 2018 debut in the San Felipe Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bolt d’Oro, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2017, will have a new rider for his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 10.

Javier Castellano will replace Corey Nakatani, owner and trainer Mick Ruis told track publicity on Sunday.

Gun Runner departs race career for life as stallion

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – That they knew this day would come did not make it any easier. On Sunday, shortly before 9 a.m. at Gulfstream Park, Gun Runner was led onto a Sallee horse van that would take him to an airplane and on to Kentucky, where he will soon begin life as a stallion. It also took him away from the people who had cared for him on the racetrack every day for nearly three straight years.

Jockey Eric Cancel out at least six weeks with back injury

Eric Cancel won 125 races from 1,090 mounts as an apprentice.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Eric Cancel will be sidelined from riding for at least six weeks after sustaining a fracture in his vertebrae as the result of a spill Saturday morning during training hours at Belmont Park.

Cancel was unseated when a horse he was on for trainer Todd Pletcher fell while galloping out after a workout. The horse was down for several minutes before eventually getting up and being vanned off. That horse was deemed to be okay, according to assistant trainer Byron Hughes.

Bolt d’Oro has first work in prep for San Felipe Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bolt d’Oro, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2017, had his first workout of the year at Santa Anita on Saturday, the start of preparation for a 3-year-old campaign scheduled to begin with the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 10.

Bolt d’Oro worked three furlongs in 36.80 seconds, and galloped-out with interest around the first turn. Jockey Corey Nakatani, who rode Bolt d’Oro in all four of his starts in 2017, was aboard.
