Queen's Plate: Cooler Mike improving at right time

Michael Burns
Cooler Mike narrowly wins an allowance race last Sunday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Nick Nosowenko is back on the Queen’s Plate trail this season with Cooler Mike, who won a key allowance prep at Woodbine on May 20.

Nosowenko has had one previous Queen’s Plate starter, Rackman, who finished 12th in the Plate back in 2013. Nosowenko said Rackman provided much needed experience for his training career when it comes to preparing a horse for the 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate.

Belmont Stakes: Pletcher giving Audible rest, readying Noble Indy, Vino Rosso

Barbara D. Livingston
Audible will bypass the Belmont Stakes, and will be freshened before beginning a summer campaign.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Audible, deemed by many the biggest threat to derail Justify’s bid for a Triple Crown, will not run in the June 9 Belmont Stakes, his connections announced Friday.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said he does not feel that Audible, the Grade 1 Florida Derby winner, is training the way he was prior to the Kentucky Derby, where he finished third, and plans call for him to be freshened for a summer campaign that could begin in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 28.

Princess La Quinta proving big bargain for Gulick

Princess La Quinta returned $8.80 in winning the Arlington Matron on Saturday.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Jim Gulick left Arlington in 2012 and didn’t train a string here again until 2017. He had some early-season success last year, but nothing like this May.

Gulick has run five horses at the meet, and all have won. His lone loss came with a maiden named Speared, who promptly returned to capture the first race Saturday at odds of 46-1. Later on that card, things got even better when Princess La Quinta won the Grade 3, $100,000 Arlington Matron, the first graded stakes score in Gulick’s long career.

Captivating Moon to skip Arlington Classic

Tom Keyser
Captivating Moon will get a rest ahead of the American Derby in July.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The best 3-year-old grass horse stabled at Arlington won’t be running in the first 3-year-old turf stakes this season at Arlington.

To put it another way, Captivating Moon isn’t starting Saturday in the Arlington Classic.

“I think we’re going to pass that and wait for the American Derby,” said Chris Block, who trains Captivating Moon for owner and breeder Bob Lothenbach. The American Derby will be run July 7.
