Thirty years after Winning Colors, Lukas still in with a shot

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas, 82, won his first Kentucky Derby in 1988 with Winning Colors. He saddles Bravazo on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – He rode back on his pony after overseeing the training of his horses, just as he’s done for decades, the only concession to age being that he used a stepstool to help him dismount when he reached his barn at Churchill Downs.

His wit is still sharp, and while the bite it once had has softened with age, trainer D. Wayne Lukas still wants things done his way. The straw in the stalls just so, the shed row raked and cleaned as though a state dinner will be served. It’s all black and white. The only gray area is Winning Colors.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was the calm after the storm on a crisp and clear Sunday morning at Churchill Downs. The racetrack was nearly deserted during the special session reserved for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks contenders following two whirlwind days during which the majority of the horses stabled locally turned in their final preps for those races.

Mott says Hofburg continues to improve

Barbara Livingston
Hofburg, under Penny Gardiner, worked a half-mile over the Churchill Downs main track on Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Bill Mott found himself in an unusual position Sunday morning on the backside of Churchill Downs. He was the center of attention in a media scrum, talking about his participation in Saturday’s 144th Kentucky Derby after the 3-year-old Hofburg worked a half-mile in 48.03 seconds over the main track.

“It’s nice to be here, we’re glad to be here and we’re glad to be here with a good horse,” Mott, who hasn’t run a horse in the Derby since Hold Me Back in 2009, told the assembled media outside barn 19, where he has kept a string at Churchill Downs since 1980.

Bolt d'Oro turns in half-mile final Derby drill

Barbara D. Livingston
Bolt d'Oro is due to ship to Churchill Downs on Monday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Everyone knows Bolt d’Oro is an outstanding colt, a three-time graded winner who finished a creditable second last out in the Santa Anita Derby.

What is less clear is how much chance Bolt d’Oro has to win the Kentucky Derby. After his final workout Saturday at Santa Anita, the issue is unresolved.

Owner-trainer Mick Ruis said the half-mile workout by Bolt d’Oro was “perfect.”

The colt’s rider, Victor Espinoza, said the work was “just a little maintenance, nothing crazy.”

Good Magic ready for 'best race,' Brown says

Barbara D. Livingston
Good Magic worked alone Saturday, with exercise rider Walter Melazquez aboard.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The third start was the charm for Good Magic as a 2-year-old, and the way he trained Saturday morning at Churchill Downs, it looks as though the third start as a 3-year-old for last year’s champion juvenile male will be his best this year.

Rayya works for Kentucky Oaks; Unique Bella breezes for Beholder Mile

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Rayya may possibly race in the Kentucky Oaks on May 4.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Rayya slowed down Saturday morning, by design, in her final workout before shipping to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks.

Her six-furlong drill at Santa Anita was her second work for trainer Bob Baffert and a stark contrast to last week, when she worked a fast six furlongs from the gate.

“She worked hard last week, I didn’t want to do too much [Saturday],” Baffert said. “We were trying to get her to sit off, get her to relax.”

Monomoy Girl has final Kentucky Oaks prep

Barbara D. Livingston
Monomoy Girl, with Florent Geroux up, goes through her final workout for the Kentucky Oaks in front of Promises Fulfilled on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Brad Cox describes himself as "a competitive guy." Apparently his filly Monomoy Girl, who will be among the Kentucky Oaks favorites next week, is a competitive girl.

As she did last week in her penultimate work, Monomoy Girl went out for her final Kentucky Oaks drill in company with Secret House. Monomoy Girl, under regular jockey Florent Geroux, was outside her partner as the two went five furlongs in 1:01.40 on Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch’s watch.

Midnight Bisou impresses in final work for Kentucky Oaks

Emily Shields
Santa Anita Oaks winner Midnight Bisou is scheduled to complete most of her remaining Kentucky Oaks preparation at her home base.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The racing surface at Santa Anita was slow and heavy early Saturday morning, but that did not matter to Midnight Bisou. By the time she returned to trainer Bill Spawr’s barn after working six furlongs at 4:30, she was not even blowing.

“That was a hell of a work,” jockey Martin Pedroza said. “She galloped out strong, too.”

All-sources handle up at Keeneland spring meet

Coady Photography/Keeneland
Keeneland closed its 2018 spring meet with a 7.2-percent increase in all-sources handle.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – All-sources handle was up 7.2 percent at the 16-day spring meet that ran April 6-27 at Keeneland, according to figures released Friday evening by track publicity.

Gross handle was $157,172,604, for a per-day average of $9,823,288. The average daily handle here last spring during a 15-day meet was $9,159,970, which was up less than 1 percent over the 2016 spring meet.

A Keeneland release said “a rollback from the takeout increase in the fall of 2017 was favorably received by horseplayers.”
