Capitol Hill impresses; Resilience not ready for return

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Bill Mott says Resilience is "still a little fat" after a strong work.

Capitol Hill, a full brother to Grade 2 Wood Memorial winner Resilience, may have found his home on a different surface.

After getting beaten by 41 lengths in his debut on dirt at Gulfstream, Capitol Hill won a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on turf by 1 1/4 lengths last Friday at Tampa Bay Downs. Capitol Hill, trained by Bill Mott, beat a heavily bet first-time starter, Uncatalyzed, from the barn of Chad Brown. The rider of Uncatalyzed, Samuel Marin, dropped his whip, but it likely didn’t make the difference between winning and losing.

Book'em Danno skipping Dubai

Coady Media
Trainer Derek Ryan felt like it would have been "a little too quick" to ship Book'em Danno to Dubai.

After initially saying he was using the Boston Handicap at Colonial Downs as a prep for the Godolphin Mile on April 5 at Meydan for Book’em Danno, trainer Derek Ryan has changed his mind and opted to keep the Grade 1-winning New Jersey-bred home for a domestic campaign.

“It’s a little too quick back with the traveling and everything,” Ryan said Monday. “We don’t like to run back in three weeks anyway. We had it in our minds, but it’s just not the right thing to do.”

The jackpot was resolved just six programs after the previous mandatory force-out of the entire pool on March 2.

There were four “singles” heading into the final leg, which was won by Westhampton, who returned $101.60 to win after circling the field and drawing off to an impressive victory in the lower-level maiden claiming event on the turf.

Morley weighing turf, dirt options for Donegal Momentum

Barbara D. Livingston
Donegal Momentum may start next in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland.

Following his win in a third-level allowance race on turf on March 6 at Fair Grounds, Donegal Momentum has returned to New York to train as trainer Tom Morley weighs where to run the dual-surface winner next.

While Morley said the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile on turf on April 11 at Keeneland is likely, the trainer said he also would have him nominated to the Grade 2, $300,000 Carter going seven furlongs on dirt on April 5 at Aqueduct. Donegal Momentum has a win and a second from three starts on dirt, and Morley said the horse would run on dirt at some point again this year.

Bernieandtherose likely headed for open company in Gazelle

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Bernieandtherose is likely to step up in class for her next start in the Gazelle at Aqueduct.

Bernieandtherose, who ran her winning streak to four straight with a 3 1/4-length victory in the Maddie May Stakes for New York-breds on March 8, will likely make her next start against open company in the Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle Stakes on April 5 at Aqueduct.

The Gazelle is New York’s last points race for the Kentucky Oaks, offering 100 points to the winner and 50 to the runner-up, either typically good enough to get into the Oaks field.
