Big plans may be in store for Little Chesney

It’s the shtick that keeps on giving.

Owner-trainer Carlo Vaccarezza likes to name some of his horses for friends and acquaintances with “Little” in the title. So when Little Chesney won the $75,000 Jupiter Beach Stakes on Sunday at Gulfstream Park in South Florida, there were questions.

Vaccarezza said he named Little Chesney for Bryan Walls, the longtime clocker at the Palm Meadows training center in Boynton Beach.

“I tell Bryan he looks like Kenny Chesney,” the superstar country musician, Vaccarezza said. “So I named the horse for him.”

Neepawa gives Casse a Canadian Triple Crown sweep

Neepawa earned his first stakes victory in Saturday's Breeders’ Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse added another accomplishment to his Canadian racing résumé Saturday when Neepawa won the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes, the third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, over 1 1/2 miles on the Woodbine turf.

Casse swept all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown this year – winning the Queen’s Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes with Wonder Gadot, and the Breeders’ Stakes with Neepawa.

Hall of Famer Lava Man back at stable

Lava Man underwent a procedure on July 31 to correct a colon displacement.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Lava Man, the Hall of Famer who was treated for colic in late July, was recently transferred from a local equine clinic to trainer Doug O’Neill’s stable at Del Mar.

O’Neill said that Lava Man will remain with his stable until the end of the summer meeting here on Sept. 3. Lava Man has been a stable pony for O’Neill.

“He’s just chillin’,” O’Neill said. “He’ll stay here until the end of the meet and then go to a farm near Santa Anita.

“He looks phenomenal. He’s on a different diet.”

Fatale Bere to target Grade 1 stakes

DEL MAR, Calif. – Fatale Bere, the winner of Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks for 3-year-old fillies, is expected to start in Grade 1 stakes within her age group at Keeneland and Santa Anita in coming months.

On Sunday, trainer Leonard Powell said he is targeting races such as the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland on Oct. 13 and the American Oaks at Santa Anita in the final week of the year.

Fashion Business may target John Henry Turf

Fashion Business drew clear in the stretch for a 5 1/4-length win in Saturday's Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Fashion Business is bound for the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3 after winning his first stakes in Saturday’s Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap. 

Trainer Phil D’Amato’s job over the next two months is to prove that the upstart 4-year-old belongs in the richest grass race in the United States.

Fashion Business earned a fees-paid berth to the $4 million BC Turf at 1 1/2 miles with an eye-catching rally in the $252,070 Del Mar Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on turf. He earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure with the victory.

Trainer Gonzalez, jockey Toledo take Laurel titles

Jevian Toledo, 23, has now won two Maryland riding titles.

Trainer Claudio Gonzalez and jockey Jevian Toledo led their respective divisions at the Laurel Park summer meet, which concluded Sunday.

Gonzalez, a 41-year-old native of Chile, long ago clinched the training title. He won 23 races at the meet, eight more than runner-up Hamilton Smith, who won the final race of the meet to break a tie for second with Dale Capuano.

The summer meet is Gonzalez's second title this year. He also topped the standings at the Laurel winter-spring meet, which ran from the first of the year to early May.

Accelerate points to Awesome Again Stakes as last BC Classic prep

Accelerate rolled to a 12 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Saturday at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Accelerate seemed to come out of his runaway victory in the Pacific Classic on Saturday in good condition, trainer John Sadler said Sunday morning at his Del Mar barn, allowing Sadler to move forward with the overall plan he has to attack this year’s Breeders’ Cup, with Accelerate headed toward the Classic and stablemate Catalina Cruiser to the Dirt Mile, both on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Eskimo Kisses, the dominant winner of Saturday’s Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, likely will step out of the 3-year-old filly division and point to the Grade 1, $500,000 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 7 for next race as her connections plot out a path to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

Gronkowski, Bravazo, Tenfold among Travers workers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Topped by Belmont Stakes runner-up Gronkowski, Preakness runner-up Bravazo, and Jim Dandy winner Tenfold, six of the expected 12 entrants for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes put in workouts Sunday morning at Saratoga.

Gronkowski, working with Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Instilled Regard, went five furlongs in 1:00.02, getting his last three furlongs in 35.81 seconds. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.71 while pulling away from Instilled Regard.
