In 37 years of training horses, Linda Rice has never started a horse at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

That’s about to change.

Rice confirmed Sunday that she plans to open up a small stable at Fair Grounds at the 2024-25 meet that begins on Nov. 22. Rice said the stable, numbering six or so horses, will be comprised mostly of turf horses that she wasn’t ready to turn out for the winter.

“Rather than shut them down, I thought we’d find a spot to go with them, experiment, and see how it goes,” Rice said.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The 2-year-old filly With the Angels, who has dominated New York-breds in three starts so far this year, is likely to remain with her own kind in Sunday’s $100,000 Key Cents Stakes for statebred juvenile fillies going six furlongs at Aqueduct.

Trainer Linda Rice had the option of waiting for the Grade 2, $250,000 Demoiselle going 1 1/8 miles here on Dec. 7, but wasn’t satisfied enough with the filly’s 3 1/4-length victory in the one-mile Maid of the Mist Stakes on Oct. 27 to stretch With the Angels out in distance at this time.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Scottish Lassie, fourth as the second choice in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, is getting a month off at a farm in Ocala, Fla., and then will likely use the South Florida road to the Kentucky Oaks, trainer Jorge Abreu said Friday.

Scottish Lassie won the Grade 1 Frizette by nine lengths at Aqueduct in October. Sent off the second choice in the Breeders’ Cup, Scottish Lassie might have moved a little too soon into a hot pace under Jose Lezcano and that likely cost her late as she finished fourth, seven lengths behind the winner, Immersive.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – It didn’t come as a surprise, but trainer Chad Brown was thrilled nonetheless when the connections of Sierra Leone officially announced late Thursday afternoon that the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner would be returning for a 4-year-old campaign in 2025.

Bonne Chance Farm is the nom de course of owner-breeders Gilberto Sayão da Silva and Paulo Fernando de Oliveira, who send out the 4-year-old filly Nom de Plume as one of the favorites in the featured fifth race Sunday at Churchill Downs.

While Cherie DeVaux trained More Than Looks to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile last weekend at Del Mar, she’s not done seeking Grade 1 turf prizes in 2024.

She Feels Pretty, smashing winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup on Oct. 12 at Keeneland, will likely travel to California for the Grade 1 American Oaks on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.

East Avenue was back on the racetrack Thursday morning at Churchill Downs but won’t have a chance to get his career back on track until sometime next year.
