Growth coming with success for trainer Andrew Lerner

ARCADIA, Calif. – Andrew Lerner, a 29-year-old trainer who launched a stable in 2017, has three runners on Friday’s eight-race program at Santa Anita.

Lerner, who trains 17 horses, is hoping to grow his stable substantially, in part by buying horses at upcoming sales.

“I want to get to 40 by January,” he said on a recent morning. “We’ve got some new partners.”

Lerner is starting to attract attention with recent success. This year, he has won with 7 of 56 starters, and has won with 5 of his last 25 runners since July 14.

As to which horse will start is unclear. Accelerate, who goes to stud in Kentucky in 2019, is the future-book favorite for the BC Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3, the same day Catalina Cruiser is expected to be favored in the BC Dirt Mile.

“We have two that are going good,” Sadler said.

The Rusty Arnold-trained Concrete Rose was a convincing three-length winner of the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 10.

The 2-year-old fillies Concrete Rose and Newspaperofrecord have made up for a lack of experience this year with identical unbeaten records in two races.

Each won a maiden race at Saratoga a day apart in August before being sent in different directions for their first start in stakes. Newspaperofrecord won the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park on Sept. 30. Concrete Rose won the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 10.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Large cast includes familiar faces

Stormy Liberal (left), pictured winning the Eddie D Stakes on Sept. 28, is looking for a repeat win in the BC Turf Sprint.

There is rarely a shortage of turf sprinters, and when Breeders’ Cup pre-entries were announced Wednesday the cast for the $1 million Turf Sprint numbered 20. That left a half-dozen hopefuls for the 5 1/2-furlong race stranded on the also-eligible list.

The first seven entries into the field were filled by Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series winners and the top points earners in graded stakes. The other seven were selected by a Breeders’ Cup committee.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Roy H, Imperial Hint set for rematch

Susie Raisher
Roy H (outside) beats Imperial Hint (inside) to win last year's Breeders' Cup Sprint.

There were few real surprises when pre-entries were announced Wednesday for the six-furlong $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

As expected, the connections of Promises Fulfilled, Whitmore, and Limousine Liberal all gave the Sprint first preference over the Dirt Mile, and the owners of X Y Jet decided they will put up the fees necessary to make their horse eligible for the race. The field will be far from full, with only 11 starters likely for the event.
