Bad weather prompts Tampa Bay Downs to cancel Friday card

Racing and training at Tampa Bay Downs have been canceled for Friday because of heavy rain and anticipation of high winds in the Tampa Bay area, according to a release from the track.

The track will remain open for simulcast wagering and poker.

“We’re disappointed to lose a day of racing, but our No. 1 priority is the safety of our horses, jockeys and fans,” said Peter Berube, the track’s vice president and general manager. “Proper track maintenance is virtually impossible with the type of weather we’ve been getting.”

Racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday.

Axelrod to have a bunch of opponents in Malibu

Barbara D. Livingston
Axelrod will find plenty of competition in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Axelrod worked a half-mile at Santa Anita on Thursday in 48.20 seconds, and will be among the contenders in the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds. Last out in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the Michael McCarthy-trained Axelrod made a premature move and finished ninth, an effort that was much better than it appears. He is expected to face a large field in the Malibu.

Possible other starters in the seven-furlong Malibu include Air Strike, Ax Man, Calexman, Cool Bobby, Copper Bullet, Identity Politics, Kanthaka, McKinzie, Pitino, and Solomini.

“I haven’t made that that judgement yet, but he’s going to breeze soon,” he said.

City of Light feeling good as Pegasus approaches

Barbara D. Livingston
Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner City of Light is working well for a planned career finale in the Jan. 26 Pegasus World Cup.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Scary thought: City of Light is better now than when he ran the race of his career seven weeks ago in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

“He has moved forward,” trainer Michael McCarthy stated with conviction Thursday at Santa Anita, after City of Light worked a half-mile in company in preparation for his career finale in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 26 at Gulfstream Park.

Wild Shot could be poised for big effort in Mr. Prospector

Joe Labozzetta
Wild Shot, winner of the 2017 Pat Day Mile, will be making his second start off a 15-month layoff in Saturday’s Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Although he was on the Kentucky Derby trail last year as a 3-year-old, it would appear one-turn races might be the right niche for Wild Shot – one-turn races such as Saturday’s Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park. The seven-furlong dash serves as the final graded stakes of the 2018 racing season in South Florida.

Haikal impresses in late-running maiden score

Joe Labozzetta/Coglianese Photos
Haikal (inside) wins his second career start by a neck last Saturday.

Haikal put in a sustained run to impressively take a six-furlong Aqueduct maiden race Saturday while making his second start. The Shadwell Stable homebred 2-year-old made up at least five lengths in the final furlong of the race to win by a neck and earn an 85 Beyer Speed Figure.

In his debut, he put in a similar run to miss by a neck going seven furlongs. The $150,000 Jerome, a mile race on Jan. 1, would have suited him but the time between races is too short.
