Delta Prince works for Maker's 46 Mile

Delta Prince worked five furlongs at Belmont Park on Monday for the Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Delta Prince, third in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park in January, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 over Belmont Park’s training track Thursday morning. He is preparing for a start in the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile next Friday at Keeneland.

Code of Honor now at Keeneland

Trainer Shug McGaughey has shipped Code of Honor from Florida to Keeneland.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Code of Honor, the Fountain of Youth winner and third-place finisher in the Florida Derby, was shipped to Keeneland from Payson Park in Florida earlier in the week, trainer Shug McGaughey said Friday.

“I just want to get him to Kentucky. Maybe a change in weather will jump-start him some,” McGaughey said Friday from Florida. “It’ll be hot and humid down here. I just want to see if I can get him to go to the next level.”

Divine Miss Grey being pointed to La Troienne

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Danny Gargan was hoping to come out of this weekend with a horse to run on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs. He already has a horse set to run on the first Friday of May under the twin spires.

Gargan, who was to run Tax in Saturday’s Wood Memorial, plans to run Divine Miss Grey, in the Grade 1, $500,000 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill on May 3. Gargan said he will also nominate Divine Miss Grey to the Grade 1 Humana Distaff going seven furlongs at Churchill, but is inclined to run in the 1 1/16-mile La Troienne.

Diversify will soon ship to Belmont Park for 6-year-old campaign

Diversify, now trained by Jonathan Thomas, is currently in Maryland but will soon be shipped to Belmont Park.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Diversify, recently crowned New York-bred Horse of the Year, will soon be returning to New York to begin preparations for his 6-year-old campaign.

Diversify is at the Fair Hill Training Center in Northeast, Md. Jonathan Thomas, who was recently given the horse to train by owner Ralph Evans, said Diversify will likely ship to Belmont by mid-April.

Thomas said Diversify has been at Fair Hill for about five weeks, in part to take advantage of that facility’s Aquatred, a pool for horses.

Assael Espinoza loses bug, starts life as journeyman jock

ARCADIA, Calif. – Assael Espinoza begins life as a journeyman rider on Sunday, and he hopes his term as an apprentice since early 2018 can provide the groundwork to remain a top-10 rider in Southern California.

Through Thursday, Espinoza was tied for 10th in the jockey standings at the meet with 14 wins. Heriberto Figueroa is the leading apprentice at this meeting with 23 wins, good for seventh place in the standings.

Espinoza rode with a five-pound apprentice claim through Saturday.

Pair of three-day race weeks for Santa Anita coming up

Thursday's Rainbow pick six at Santa Anita begins with race 3 and carries a jackpot of $512,056.

ARCADIA, Calif. – After Sunday, Santa Anita will run two Friday-Sunday weeks to start the spring-summer segment of the track’s marathon six-month meeting.

There are two graded stakes planned for that period – the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup at 1 1/2 miles on dirt April 14 and the Grade 2 Kona Gold Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on April 20.

A four-day racing week is scheduled for April 25-28.

Del Mar stakes schedule has familiar look

ARCADIA, Calif. – The stakes schedule at the summer meeting at Del Mar, which runs from July 17 to Sept. 2, is very similar to those of recent seasons.

The track announced a calendar of 40 stakes, one fewer than last year, with the $75,000 CERF Stakes having been dropped. The race was run on Labor Day weekend in the past.

Several worked for upcoming stakes assignments around the country, and he also worked several sets of unraced 2-year-olds.

Vino Rosso gunning for Grade 1 win in Carter

OZONE PARK N.Y. – Vino Rosso, who won last year’s Wood Memorial after finishing fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby, will seek to become a Grade 1 winner in Saturday’s $400,000 Carter Stakes.

Vino Rosso came off a 6 1/2-month layoff to win the $150,000 Stymie Stakes going a mile here on March 9. That victory made him 3 for 3 at Aqueduct, including a debut victory going seven furlongs in 2017.
