Less might be more for Divine Miss Grey

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Divine Miss Grey won the March 10 Heavenly Prize Invitational to open her 5-year-old campaign.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Danny Gargan plans to take a less-is-more approach when it comes to Divine Miss Grey this year.

Gargan said he doesn’t envision Divine Miss Grey racing 10 times this year like she did in 2018, but he’s hoping to target some big races with the 5-year-old daughter of Divine Park.

Dennis Moore and other officials conduct testing on the Santa Anita Park main track on March 7.

ARCADIA, Calif. – While the California racing industry held its collective breath, it was full speed ahead Wednesday morning on the main track at Santa Anita.

For the first time since last week, when the main track closed and racing was suspended, timed workouts took place Wednesday. It did not take long for Santa Anita to look much as it normally does after the track opens at 5 a.m. – racehorses running fast, working out at full speed.

Derby Watch: Mandella, rarely in Derby fray, has two prospects progressing

Barbara D. Livingston
Omaha Beach, shown training at Santa Anita on Feb. 18, enters the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes off a win over maidens Feb. 2.

For all that he’s accomplished in his career, and it’s been a lot, Richard Mandella has had no luck in the Kentucky Derby. Not that it’s been a priority. After all, he’s only run six horses in the race, beginning in 1984, and hasn’t had a starter since 2004.

Tequilita, now 5, is expected to go favored in Saturday's Grade 2 Inside Information Stakes.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Tequilita, a two-time graded stakes winner at Gulfstream, could be making the final start of her career when likely to come favored Saturday in the weekend highlight, the Grade 2, $200,000 Inside Information.

Trained by Michael Matz for his wife, owner-breeder Dorothy “Dee Dee” Matz, Tequilita most recently was third in the Feb. 16 Royal Delta. The 5-year-old mare has earned $680,800 from 20 prior starts.

“We’ll see how she runs Saturday and decide whether or not to run her once more” in the April 6 Madison at Keeneland, Michael Matz said.

Servis filly likely favorite in Friday allowance feature

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Jason Servis has enjoyed a strong meet this year at Gulfstream Park.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Jason Servis had a strike rate of 30 for 67 (44.8 percent) at the Gulfstream Park championship meet as another five-day race week got under way here Wednesday, and chances are good the veteran trainer will improve on that gaudy record by the time Friday action is finished.

Servis was scheduled to send out one starter Wednesday and Thursday – each of them favored – and he’s likely to have two favorites from as many starters here Friday in Bronzed (race 6) and Richie’s Sister (race 8).

Concrete Rose likely to target Edgewood

Tom Keyser
Concrete Rose was a half-length winner of the March 9 Florida Oaks, her first start of the year.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – It won’t be long now before Rusty Arnold gets home to Kentucky, but his latest stable star, Concrete Rose, probably won’t be racing at the Keeneland spring meet.

“As much as I like running at Keeneland, I’m probably going to wait until the race on Oaks Day,” Arnold said this week from his Palm Meadows winter base, referring to the Edgewood Stakes on the May 3 Kentucky Oaks undercard at Churchill Downs.
