Duhon has strong hand at Lone Star

Trainer Paul Duhon appears to have a strong hand for the final card of the Lone Star meet on Sunday. He has three horses entered, and all will start as top choices, led by Divine Holiday.

Divine Holiday, who has won his last two starts, goes in the seventh race. He is part of an eight-horse field for the optional $40,000 claimer for 3-year-olds and up at a mile, which also drew Direct Dial, the reigning Texas-bred of the year, and stakes winners Hallelujah Hit, Analyze This Jet, and Witt’sdollarnight.

Jerkens taking a good look at Whitney for Preservationist

Preservationist worked three furlongs in 36.86 seconds on Friday at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Preservationist, the Grade 2 Suburban winner, returned to the work tab Friday morning, breezing three furlongs in 36.86 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. While that was the time from the three-furlong pole to the wire, Preservationist went out a half-mile in 49.47 and five furlongs in 1:01.75.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said he worked Preservationist on Friday because the horse is now seriously being considered for the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on Aug. 3.

Terra's Angel points to River Cities at Louisiana Downs

Terra's Angel is being pointed to the River Cities on Sept. 7 at Louisiana Downs.

Following a sharp allowance win at Lone Star Park, Terra’s Angel is being pointed to the $60,000 River Cities at Louisiana Downs, said trainer Terry Eoff. The 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares will be run on the Super Derby undercard Sept. 7.

Terra’s Angel won at the distance July 13, when she fought off multiple stakes winner Cowgirls Like Us for a head victory in the turf allowance at Lone Star. Terra’s Angel earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 80.

Rowayton targeting Curlin rather than Jim Dandy

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Don Chatlos said Friday’s Curlin rather than the Jim Dandy the following afternoon would be next up for Rowayton coming out of his third-place finish in the Grade 3 Dwyer last month at Belmont Park. Rowayton tuned up for the 1 1/8-mile Curlin by breezing five furlongs in 1:02.58 before galloping out three-quarters in 1:16.42 with jockey Joel Rosario aboard over the main track here Friday.

Gunnevera to miss Whitney with bruised foot

Gunnevera, who has now earned more than $5.5 million, will get six weeks off.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Antonio Sano reported Friday he will be forced to bypass the Grade 1 Whitney with Gunnevera after missing some training time due to a bruised foot.

Gunnevera has not started since his third-place finish in the Dubai World Cup, nor has he recorded an official workout since going five furlongs in 1:03.40 on June 15 at Gulfstream Park West.

One Bad Boy draws rail in Prince of Wales

The way they finished in the $1 million Queen’s Plate is the order in which they drew for Tuesday’s $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, the middle leg of the Canadian Triple Crown at Fort Erie.

One Bad Boy, the 3 1/2-length winner of the 10-furlong Queen’s Plate, drew post 1 and was tabbed as the 7-5 favorite in the five-horse Prince of Wales field. Flavien Prat retains the mount on the Richard Baltas-trained ridgling.

New owners of Ellis Park planning major renovations

HENDERSON, Ky. – The new owners of Ellis Park reiterated their commitment to horse racing when detailing plans to sink tens of millions of dollars into the aging facility during a media briefing Friday in the clubhouse of this 97-year-old track.

“We see this as a tremendous business opportunity,” said Skip Sayre, who was among several officials representing the new ownership entity, Ellis Entertainment LLC, at the briefing. “We are looking to restore Ellis to its iconic status and make it an attraction that customers can enjoy and appreciate.”

Santa Anita granted provisional approval for fall meet

DEL MAR, Calif. – Santa Anita received provisional approval from the California Horse Racing Board on Friday to run its six-week autumn meeting from Sept. 27 to Nov. 3 contingent on the track informing racing board staff in coming weeks of specific plans regarding the use of the hillside turf course for sprints.

Santa Anita has not conducted races at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course since a two-horse spill occurred on March 31. From early April through the conclusion of the track’s six-month meeting on June 23, all turf sprints were run at five furlongs.

Saratoga cancels Saturday card, moves races to Sunday

NYRA canceled Saturday's Saratoga card due to a forecast for excessive heat in the region.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Due to a forecast that calls for excessive heat, Saturday’s 11-race card at Saratoga has been canceled, the New York Racing Association announced Thursday.

Saturday’s races will be moved to Sunday. The 13-race card will also include the Grade 3, $200,000 Shuvee Stakes as well as a steeplechase race that was canceled from Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, an excessive heat watch is in effect for northern Saratoga County on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. The heat index could be as high as 107, according to the NWS.
