Got Stormy returns in De La Rose Stakes

Got Stormy was scratched from the Just a Game Stakes on Belmont Stakes Day after being injured in his stall.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Got Stormy scratched from the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes on Belmont Stakes Day after getting cast in her stall a few days before the race.

Saturday, Got Stormy will attempt to regroup for trainer Mark Casse in the $100,000 De La Rose Stakes, which drew 11 runners for the turf and three more who are designated as main-track only.

Got Stormy, a three-time stakes winner, was entered in the Just a Game off a runner-up finish to Beau Recall in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile on Kentucky Derby Day.

Saratoga-loving Voodoo Song tries easier in Lure Stakes

Voodoo Song will try to snap a three-race losing streak Saturday in the Lure Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Voodoo Song won the Grade 1 Fourstardave here last summer, but his connections have looked for something a bit easier for the 5-year-old New York-bred this summer.

Voodoo Song, trained by Linda Rice, was one of nine entered Wednesday for Saturday’s $100,000 Lure Stakes, a mile race for horses who have not won a graded stakes this year. One of those nine, Control Group, was entered for the main track.

Clement enters Disco Partner and Pure Sensation against World of Trouble

Late-running Disco Partner would benefit if World of Trouble was challenged on the front end of the Troy Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Christophe Clement has entered his accomplished pair of turf sprinters, Disco Partner and Pure Sensation, against World of Trouble in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Troy Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.

Disco Partner, who won the 2016 Troy and who has earned $1.4 million, finished third, 2 1/2 lengths behind World of Trouble, in the Grade 1 Jaipur on June 8 at Belmont. He does his best running from off the pace and could be aided if Pure Sensation is able to put some pressure on World of Trouble early.

Richard Hazelton, 10th all-time in wins by trainer, dies at 88

Richard Hazelton won more than 4,700 races in his training career.

Richard Hazelton, the 10th-most winning trainer in North American racing history, died Tuesday in the Los Angeles area at 88.

Hazelton died after suffering a stroke but had been in relatively poor health for some time. His death was reported by his son, Scott Hazelton, the well-known television racing analyst who had been helping take care of his father since Richard Hazelton moved to California from his home in Illinois several years ago.

Del Mar business down over first 10 days of meet

Attendance at Del Mar has dipped nearly 10 percent for the first two weeks of this year's meet compared to 2018.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Del Mar sustained significant declines in average attendance and handle through the first two weeks of the seven-week summer meeting, according to data provided by the racetrack.

Through Sunday, the 10th day of the 36-day season, all-sources handle averaged $11,863,783, down 14.3 percent compared to $13,850,047 in a similar period in 2018.

Ontrack handle declined 16.4 percent, from $1,877,307 to $1,568,956.

Ontrack attendance is down 9.7 percent, from 15,195 to 13,715.

Runaway Ghost has surgery, eyes return in 2020

Runaway Ghost had been pointed to the $200,000 Downs at Albuquerque Handicap on Saturday night, but instead will sit out the rest of the year with a soft-tissue injury.

“We went for minor surgery,” trainer Todd Fincher said. “Very minor soft-tissue damage. Everything went real well.”

Runaway Ghost will be given proper time to rehab, and the intent is a return to racing during the first quarter of next year, according to Fincher.

Runaway Ghost, 4, is a winner of more than $750,000 for his breeder and owner, Joe Peacock.

One Bad Boy back home with eye on Del Mar Derby

The dirt surface at Fort Erie makes the Prince of Wales a tricky race for One Bad Boy.

DEL MAR, Calif. – One Bad Boy, winner of the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine in June, recently returned to trainer Richard Baltas’s stable at Del Mar and is a candidate for the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on Sept. 1.

The $250,000 Del Mar Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf would be the graded stakes debut for One Bad Boy, who was third in the Prince of Wales for Canadian-breds on July 23 at Fort Erie.

“We’ll look at that race if he bounces back,” Baltas said of the Del Mar Derby. “He’s very good on the turf.”

Melancon, Monte Man make for strong team

Jockey Gerard Melancon has had more stakes success on reigning Louisiana-bred of the year Monte Man than any other rider, and on Saturday the pair will be out to defend their title in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint at Louisiana Downs.

Melancon and Monte Man will be invading from Evangeline Downs, where they won the $75,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint on May 25. It was the fourth stakes race Melancon has won aboard Monte Man from five starts with the horse. The partnership dates to February 2018.

Grade 1 winner Bigger Picture is among the bigger names expected in action Sunday on a very busy Kentucky Downs Preview Day at Ellis Park in western Kentucky.

Trainer Mike Maker scratched Bigger Picture last Saturday from the Bowling Green at Saratoga to run the 8-year-old gelding in the 1 1/4-mile Turf Cup Preview, which is one of five $100,000 preps Sunday at Ellis for the five-day Kentucky Downs meet, which runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 12.
