Fort Erie meet opens with higher purses, capital improvements

According to the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium, the track will be closing Dec. 31 after 115 years in operation

Fort Erie Race Track will begin its 122nd season of live racing Tuesday with a card that drew 63 entries for nine races. The meet is highlighted once again by the 84th running of the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on July 23. The Prince of Wales serves as the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown and will be run over 1 3/16 miles on dirt.

Racing will be conducted on Sundays and Tuesdays. The track will have cards only on Tuesdays for the first two weeks of the season, with Sunday racing kicking off June 9. The meet’s closing day is Oct. 15.

Spinoff may rebound in Belmont Stakes for Pletcher

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Todd Pletcher’s success in the Belmont Stakes has come primarily with horses who disappointed in the Kentucky Derby, but rebounded five weeks later to run well in the “Test of the Champion.” In addition to winning the Belmont with Derby also-rans Palace Malice and Tapwrit, he’s had strong runner-up finishes from the likes of Dunkirk, Destin, and Stay Thirsty.

Pletcher is hoping for more of the same with Spinoff, who finished 18th in the Kentucky Derby but who will be given another shot at a classic in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on June 8.

Red Ruby on track for Fleur de Lis on Stephen Foster night

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Red Ruby, last seen winning the 2018 Delaware Oaks by 13 lengths, is on target to make her return to action in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on the June 15 Stephen Foster night card at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Kellyn Gorder said recently that Red Ruby is training forwardly toward her comeback and that the Grade 2, $750,000 Delaware Handicap on July 14 would follow the Fleur de Lis, assuming all goes well. Red Ruby, a gray 4-year-old filly by Tiznow, has had four timed works at Keeneland since April 25.

Giant Expectations back with statebreds in Commentator Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. – It has been two years since Giant Expectations last faced New York-breds, winning a maiden race and a first-level allowance in an 11-day span here in 2017.

Twelve races and $1 million in purse earnings later, Giant Expectations is back at Belmont to run Monday in the $200,000 Commentator Stakes, a one-mile race for New York-breds and the featured event on an 11-race Big Apple Showcase Day card at Belmont Park.

Trainer Peter Eurton said the Commentator was a good spot for him, “and he loves Belmont.”

Mind Control fires bullet for Woody Stephens Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. – Three-time stakes winner Mind Control worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 on Friday at Monmouth Park, the fastest of 11 works at that distance. Mind Control is preparing for the Grade 1, $400,000 Woody Stephens on the June 8 Belmont Stakes undercard.

“He worked super, cooled out great,” trainer Gregg Sacco said. “His weight is fantastic, his energy level is great, the spacing is good for him.”

The Woody Stephens will be Mind Control’s first start since he won the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes on April 6 at Aqueduct.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Todd Pletcher knows the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap is going to be “a nasty race,” but in Coal Front, he feels he has a horse who can get down and dirty with the best of them.

On Friday, Coal Front worked a strong five furlongs in 1:00.65 over the Belmont Park training track, galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.05, seven furlongs in 1:27.15, and completing a mile in 1:41.12 under jockey Jose Ortiz.

“That’s kind of the way he’s trained all along. He seems to get into a comfortable rhythm and keeps going,” Pletcher said.

Downs at Albuquerque releases stakes schedule

The Downs at Albuquerque has announced its stakes schedule for the meet that opens June 28, and the lineup includes the Bank of America Challenge Championships. The traveling series of major stakes for Quarter Horses will be run Oct. 26. It will be the first time Albuquerque has hosted the races.

Albuquerque will offer 34 stakes during its meet for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Purses for those races are worth $3.6 million.

Remington sets Okla. Derby for Sept. 29, Springboard Mile for Dec. 15

Remington Park has set the dates for its richest Thoroughbred races, the Oklahoma Derby and Springboard Mile, while releasing its stakes schedule. Each race is worth $400,000. The Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby will be run Sept. 29. The Springboard Mile, a points race for the Kentucky Derby, is set for Dec. 15.

Remington opens its 67-date Thoroughbred season Aug. 23. The meet runs through Dec. 15. There will be 32 stakes worth a cumulative $3.7 million.

Game Winner out of Belmont; Master Fencer in transit from Kentucky

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Bob Baffert is taking a pass on this year’s Belmont Stakes.

Baffert, who has won two of the last four Belmonts – completing Triple Crowns with American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018 – confirmed Friday that Game Winner, last year’s 2-year-old champion male who finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby, would not run in the Belmont on June 8. Baffert said he was not pointing any other horse to the last leg of the Triple Crown.

Mr Money Bags targets Stymie division of Texas Stallion Stakes

Mr Money Bags, a multiple stakes winner who had an equipment issue during the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs, is to make his next start at Lone Star Park. Trainer Mike Neatherlin said the horse is being pointed to the $65,000 Stymie division of the Texas Stallion Stakes on June 1. The race for 3-year-olds will be run at a mile.

Earlier this year, Mr Money Bags won a six-furlong division of the Texas Stallion Stakes by 11 1/2 lengths at Sam Houston. One start later, he romped by seven lengths in the track’s $50,000 Groovy, earning a shot at the Pat Day Mile.
