LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mitchell Murrill arrived plenty early for the Keeneland fall meet, and it seems to have paid off. Murrill was the first jockey among an ultra-deep riding colony to visit the winner’s circle, guiding Bordini from far back to win the meet opener Friday.

CHRB commissioner Alfieri relinquishes owner's license

ARCADIA, Calif. – California Horse Racing Board commissioner Dennis Alfieri relinquished his owner’s license earlier this week to focus on regulatory matters facing racing in the state, he said in an interview on Thursday evening.

The decision was in reaction to a recent statement by Gov. Gavin Newsom asking members of the racing board to avoid conflicts of interest, such as having a direct involvement in the sport they regulate.

Churchill Downs to buy Turfway Park for $46 million

ELMONT, N.Y. – Sistercharlie, the reigning female turf champion and a winner of five consecutive Grade 1 races, will be heavily favored to make it six in a row when she heads a field of seven entered Thursday for Sunday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Flower Bowl, a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Sistercharlie will be making just her third start of the year after winning both the Diana and Beverly D. She will break from post 2 under John Velazquez.

Come Dancing puts up easy work at Belmont

Come Dancing is targeting the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

ELMONT, N.Y. – On a wet, gloomy Thursday morning on Long Island, Come Dancing returned to the work tab, breezing a half-mile in 49.94 seconds over a good Belmont Park training track. Come Dancing, winner of four graded stakes this year including the Grade 1 Ballerina, is pointing to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Trainer Carlos Martin wanted Javier Castellano to work Come Dancing, so he decided to move the work up to Thursday as Castellano is scheduled to be at Keeneland on Friday and Saturday.

Maximum Security to run again this year

Maximum Security is targeting one of two late-season Grade 1 options to end his campaign.

ELMONT, N.Y. – While Maximum Security won’t make the Breeders’ Cup, his 3-year-old campaign is not complete.

Trainer Jason Servis said he would like to run Maximum Security in a Grade 1 race later this year, potentially the $750,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 7 or the $500,000 Clark at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29. Servis said he would like to run him in a prep race before then, perhaps the Grade 3, $200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont on Oct. 26.

Cistron out of Breeders' Cup Sprint but will return next year

ARCADIA, Calif. – An untimely setback has knocked California’s top sprinter out of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Cistron, whose victory in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar earned a fees-paid berth in the BC Sprint, is out until early next year, trainer John Sadler confirmed on Thursday.

“He tweaked his back, and he needs about 30 days off,” Sadler said.

Cigar Mile at Aqueduct pushed back a week

The Grade 1 Cigar Mile will be run on Dec. 7, a week later than usual, and be part of the Aqueduct winter meet, according to a schedule released Wednesday by the New York Racing Association.

Typically run on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, the Cigar Mile has been pushed back in recent years to be run four weeks after the Breeders’ Cup, in early December. However, this year it will be conducted five weeks after the Breeders’ Cup, perhaps making it more enticing for a runner from Breeders’ Cup card to run back.

You might think trainer Chad Brown has won every Grade 1 turf race in North America, but there’s at least one that has eluded the formidable reach of the Brown stable. That’s the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, which Brown will have a have a chance to add to his stuffed résumé this fall with the Palace Malice colt Structor.
