COVID-19 drives decline in handle at Woodbine meet

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine Entertainment announced Friday that the shortened 2020 Thoroughbred meet at Woodbine produced an all-sources handle of $462,041,545, down more than $54 million compared to the 2019 meet handle of $516,189,419.

Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council approves tighter clenbuterol restrictions

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A medication committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Tuesday approved a proposal that would extend the withdrawal time for clenbuterol from 14 days to 21 days and require a horse to test negative for the bronchial dilator before being allowed to race again.

Del Mar autumn-meet betting handle up by one-third over last year

Del Mar completed a 15-day autumn meeting with all-sources total handle of $195.9 million, a gain of 33 percent over a 13-day meeting in 2019.

This year’s five-week meeting included the lucrative simulcasts of the Breeders’ Cup races from Keeneland on Nov. 6-7, ideal weather compared to a 2019 season that lost two days of racing to rain, and an increase in field size.

Last year, the Breeders’ Cup was held at Santa Anita the weekend before the start of the Del Mar autumn meeting

Woodbine ends meet early to comply with Ontario lockdown

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine Entertainment has announced that Sunday afternoon’s thoroughbred card will be the track's final one of the year. The Ontario government announced Friday that Toronto will enter the province’s gray ‘lockdown’ phase of coronavirus-related restrictions, which allows for training but no horse racing.

Sunday is the 97th day of a scheduled 109-day meet that began on June 6 and was to conclude Dec. 13.

Golden Gate has more than 200 associates test COVID-19 positive

More than 200 people living or working on-site at Golden Gate Fields have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a release sent out late Friday night by the track and the city of Berkeley (Calif.) Public Health department.

Racing has been suspended at Golden Gate for more than a week following a COVID-19 outbreak at the track, where the stable area is located in the city of Berkeley. The grandstand sits in the city of Albany.

Golden Gate Fields cancels racing through November because of COVID-19 spike

Golden Gate carded four turf races for opening day of its Wine Country Racing meet on Friday.

Golden Gate Fields, which has been closed since Nov. 13 because of a spike in COVID-19 cases, announced Wednesday it would remain closed for racing at least through November to address an outbreak of COVID-19 in the backstretch area. Golden Gate had hoped to reopen on Thursday.

Testing was done of all employees and backstretch personnel with a number of positives, many asymptomatic, discovered among backstretch personnel. No one in the racing office tested positive.

FanDuel to partner with Fairmount on renovations, sportsbook

FanDuel, the fantasy-sports and gambling company that shares a parent company with TVG, has reached a deal to provide money to renovate Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Ill., and open a sportsbook at the track, the two companies announced on Monday.

The agreement will allow FanDuel to capitalize on the location of Fairmount Park, which sits just over the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. Sports betting is legal in Illinois, while it remains prohibited in Missouri. St. Louis is Missouri’s largest metropolitan area.
