LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Keeneland January horses of all ages sale may be the first sale on the calendar, but usually it reflects the year just ended more than it predicts the year to come. As the auction entered the fourth of five sessions Thursday, the message at Keeneland January is that the general buying economy is still somewhat conservative, as it was for much of 2002. But, as always, good horses bring good money.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Grade 2 winner and millionaire Two Item Limit has been retired, owner Joseph Graffeo announced Thursday.
A 5-year-old Twining mare, Two Item Limit won the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes in 2000 and the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in 2001. She retires to Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky. Graffeo has not determined the mare's 2003 breeding plans yet.
Two Item Limit, an Illinois-bred daughter of the Caveat mare Spa Warning, retires with a career record of 28-7-3-5 and earnings of $1,060,584. Steve DiMauro trained Two Item Limit.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - After posting solid returns at its second session Tuesday, the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale continued Wednesday with a $250,000 early leader in Sweet Nanette. Offered as a racing or broodmare prospect by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Sweet Nanette, a 5-year-old You and I mare, at first appeared to be a buy-back when Taylor Made representatives signed the ticket. But they said that a partnership of Taylor Made clients, operating under the name of Rainbow Stable, had bought the mare to breed.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland officials are considering whether to cancel the July selected yearling sale this year for the first time since the sale's inception in 1943.
The Keeneland Association has been polling consignors and buyers since Christmas week and is expected to announce a decision about the sale - at least for 2003 - by the end of the month, according to one Keeneland official.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Habibti, the winner of two major stakes for 2-year-old fillies in 2001, has been retired after a series of disappointing races, according to Richard Mulhall, the racing manager for The Thoroughbred Corp.
Habibti, 4, ends her career with 3 wins in 11 starts and earnings of $564,851. In her final start, she finished seventh in the La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 28.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland's January all-ages sale opened Monday with few fireworks, posting a top early price of $475,000 as of 5:45 p.m.
Louis Brooks Ranch, Ltd., bought session-leader Belle Nuit for that price from the Taylor Made Sales Agency. The 13-year-old mare is a daughter of Dr. Carter out of the Tom Rolfe mare Belle Noel. Belle Nuit, a Grade 3-placed stakes winner, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Ms. Eloise, among other stakes runners. Already the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Belle Cherie, Belle Nuit sold in foal to Unbridled's Song.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Seattle Dancer, the half-brother to Seattle Slew who still holds the $13.1 million record yearling auction price, will stand in Germany in 2003.
The Racing Post has reported that the 19-year-old stallion, who once stood at Coolmore's North American division at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, has been on Japan's stallion roster since Coolmore sold him in 1995.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Owners wishing to submit name requests to the The Jockey Club for their foals of 2001 must do so by Feb. 1 to avoid being charged a $50 late fee, The Jockey Club said in a reminder issued Friday.
The Jockey Club also has published 47,120 names that have been released from active use and are now available. Those newly available names, as well as The Jockey Club's list of names already in use, are published on the organization's website at http://home.jockeyclub.com.
