Three state honors for Carson Hollow

A fleet-footed filly by the name of Carson Hollow stole the show last Tuesday night in Albany, N.Y.

At an awards dinner hosted by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Carson Hollow was named the 2002 horse of the year and champion 3-year-old filly and sprinter. Carson Hollow's breeder, Patricia Purdy, and her trainer, Richard Dutrow Jr., also were honored. The filly's regular rider, John Velazquez, won NYTB's inaugural award for champion jockey.

Deaths of Smarten, Shelter Half leave void

Maryland has lost two of its most famous pensioners, the venerable stallions Smarten, 27, and Shelter Half, 28, each succumbing to infirmities of old age within a week in late March.

Dance in Time: Canada's Ipi Tombe connection

Dance in Time won't be remembered as one of Canada's all-time top racehorses but he's receiving a lot of attention this spring as the broodmare sire of the exciting filly Ipi Tombe.

Ipi Tombe, the Zimbabwean-bred wonderhorse who dusted colts in the Dubai Duty Free and is headed to North America, is a 5-year-old daughter of the unraced Mr. Prospector stallion Manshood and out of Carnet de Danse, a winning English-bred mare by Dance in Time.

Hasten to Add a two-market sire

Carson Hollow top N.Y. bred of '02

Carson Hollow and her connections were the big winners Tuesday night at the annual New York Thoroughbred Breeders' awards dinner in Albany, N.Y.

Carson Hollow, who won last Saturday's Grade 2 Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap at Aqueduct, was named New York-bred horse of the year and champion 3-year-old filly and sprinter for her 2002 campaign.

Carson's Hollow's trainer, Richard Dutrow Jr., her breeder, Patricia Purdy, and the filly's regular rider, John Velazquez, also were honored with NYTB awards.

Smarten euthanized at 27

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Smarten, winner of four derbies in 1979, died Monday at age 27. Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md., announced that it had euthanized the pensioned stallion after he developed an intestinal blockage.

Anees hurt, out of stud service

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Anees, North America's champion 2-year-old in 1999, has been withdrawn from stud service after injuring himself in a paddock accident.

Mill Ridge Farm announced Tuesday that Anees injured his left front pastern Monday when he was turned out after the morning breeding session. The farm shipped Anees to Lexington's Hagyard Davidson McGee equine hospital, where the fracture was surgically repaired. The stallion remains at Hagyard, where his prognosis, according to Mill Ridge, is "guarded."

Anees is likely to miss the rest of the breeding season.

McGaughey, Tattersalls rep, dead

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Linda Ann Conley McGaughey, longtime North American representative for the English-based Tattersalls sales company, died last Friday in Lexington. She was 59 and had been treated for an undisclosed illness since last fall.

McGaughey was a well-known figure in the international Thoroughbred sales world and had represented Tattersalls since the mid-1980's, working primarily to assist consignors and help bring American-bred horses to market at Tattersalls auctions.

Calumet widow vows to carry on

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Barbara de Kwiatkowski, widow of Calumet Farm owner Henryk de Kwiatkowski, said this week that Calumet will remain a horse farm "as long as I can help it."

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported de Kwiatkowski's statement Friday. Henryk de Kwiatkowski died March 17 of pneumonia.

Barbara de Kwiatkowski, the second wife of the Polish-born airline magnate, told the paper that "Calumet is going to stay there as long as I can help it, because Calumet works. It just depends really on my stepchildren."
