Not This Time puts freshman sires into the win column, twice

Barbara D. Livingston
Not This Time was the last of the Breeders' Cup horses to work Saturday. He completed five furlongs in 1:01.71.

Last week was the time for Not This Time. A graded stakes-winning juvenile himself, Not This Time got off to a fast start with two first-crop winners in as many days, taking command of the North American freshman sire list early. Through Sunday, no other freshman stallion in this region had yet recorded a winner.

Runhappy has first starter as sire Thursday at Churchill Downs

Barbara D. Livingston
Runhappy's first crop of racing age is set to make its debut Thursday at Churchill Downs.

As more racing jurisdictions begin to emerge from their pandemic-forced shutdowns, there are more of the traditional early-season opportunities for juveniles – and therefore, more runners starting out for freshman sires. That’s obvious at Churchill Downs, where the second week of the track’s belated spring meeting features Kentucky’s first 2-year-old races, and the first entrants for several freshman sires, including Eclipse Award champion sprinter Runhappy.

Jockey Club limit on stallion books draws mixed reaction

Barbara D. Livingston
Justify, who is standing his first season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, will shuttle to Australia, where the breeding season begins Sept. 1.

Triple Crown winner Justify was tied as the most active stallion in North America in his first season at stud in 2019. Justify covered 252 mares, many of them top-level winners or producers, according to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred. Justify’s first foals are arriving this season – but when his first sons enter stud some handful of years from now, the rules, competition, and market they face will be quite different.

Halladay, by War Front out of a Tapit mare, wins the $75,000 Sunshine Forever Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Tapit and War Front are both standouts in the North American sire ranks and have been rivals atop the commercial leaderboard. The two stallions are starting to combine for success together as well, with recent stakes winner Halladay one example of their lines being crossed.

Halladay, a 4-year-old War Front colt out of the Grade 3-winning Tapit mare Hightap, won the Sunshine Forever Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. It was his second stakes win, as he previously took the Tropical Park Derby in December at Gulfstream. He placed in a pair of stakes last fall in New York.
