Spendthrift Farm has acquired the future breeding rights to Vekoma, who captured the Grade 1 Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap last Saturday at Belmont Park.
The Met Mile has a long reputation as a stallion-making race, and with this acquisition Spendthrift will now stand three of the last four winners of the race. The farm also stands 2017 winner Mor Spirit, who entered stud in 2019; and last year’s victor, Mitole, the Eclipse Award champion sprinter who entered stud in 2020.
The Metropolitan Handicap has a history of being a stallion-making race because it showcases the brilliance that is so desired in the American market. Vekoma remained unbeaten in his 4-year-old season with a victory Saturday in the Grade 1 Runhappy Metropolitan at Belmont Park, and with a pedigree that sports several successful sires, he has solid credentials to become a top sire himself.
Outwork was the first winner for his sire, Uncle Mo, when he won his debut in April 2015 at Keeneland. He was swiftly followed by many more winners as Uncle Mo was the leading freshman sire of 2015, highlighted by Eclipse Award champion Nyquist.
Kentucky Derby hopeful Honor A. P. will stand at Lane's End Farm upon his eventual retirement from racing as that Kentucky stallion operation continues to build on the legacy of the late A.P. Indy.
Lane's End announced on Friday morning that it had acquired the breeding rights to Honor A. P., who is from the first crop of its young stallion Honor Code, the Eclipse Award champion older male of 2015. Honor Code, also the sire of Belmont Stakes third-place finisher Max Player, is by Hall of Famer and sire A.P. Indy, who died in February at age 31 at Lane's End.
The international Coolmore operation has acquired the breeding rights to Tiz the Law, winner of last Saturday's Belmont Stakes, and will stand the colt at its Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., upon his eventual retirement from racing, the operation announced Thursday.
Multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie will stand at Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., upon his eventual retirement from racing, the farm announced Monday evening. The 5-year-old son of Street Sense is targeting the Grade 1 Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap – a race with a stallion-making reputation – on July 4 at Belmont Park as he continues his campaign.
Gamine stole the show on Belmont Stakes Day by devastating the field in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes by 18 3/4 lengths, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 110. Her time for the mile was 1:32.55, a stakes record and just off Najran’s track record of 1:32.24, set in 2003.
The 2019 freshman sire class in North America, with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah leading a bevy of champions and major winners, was lauded as a historically strong class even before its first runners hit the track. The group lived up to its billing last year, with 12 graded/group stakes winners, led by a pair of Breeders’ Cup winners. Turning the corner into 2020, the class has continued to shine in major events.
