Two good Gill claims target Millions

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Michael Gill, the nation's top owner by wins, moved his California stable to the East Coast last spring, it marked the end of a largely unsuccessful six-month involvement in California racing.

Gill claimed more than 100 horses from October 2003 until May of this year, but had little to show for it. While racing in California, Gill had 18 winners from 153 starters, a 12 percent success rate. When his stable left, Gill admitted that in hindsight he made a lot of bad claims.

Halo's Image star of parade

It was a Florida Chamber of Commerce day, and more than a thousand Florida breeders were on hand for Sunday's Florida Thoroughbred Farm Managers parade of stallions and equine trade show. Thirty-three stallions were shown at the Ocala Equestrian Center, adjacent to the Ocala Breeders' Sales complex.

Halo's Image, Florida's 2004 leading sire by progeny earnings, was named the farm managers' sire of the year.

"It's an honor," said George Isaacs, general manager of Bridlewood Farm, which owns Halo's Image. "He will stand for $10,000 live foal, and he's earned it."

She never raced, and Phipps decided to use the name once again 19 years later for a colt he bred by Danzig out of his homebred mare Hidden Reserve. Last Saturday, Defer became a stakes winner in his third lifetime start, winning the Laurel Futurity.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - When the Keeneland November breeding stock sale ended its 12-day run Friday afternoon, it had done some things almost no one thought it would do: improve on the results of last year's Keeneland November sale, set a sale-record for average, and equal the November record for median.

A nice little place for post-surgery R and R

There are over 300 Thoroughbred farms in north-central Florida, and they range from the 100-acre-plus facilities to mama-poppa homesteads of a few acres. Some are niche operations; others offer a variety of services, breeding, training, sales prep.

Jerry and Linda Paradise's Tuxedo Farm is a niche operation on a modest scale. What the 25-acre farm specializes in is pre-operation and post-operation R and R.

"It's a specialty business," said Jerry Paradise. "I get all sorts of lay-ups and surgery candidates off the racetrack."
