Two $1M mares at Tattersalls

A pair of million-dollar mares were the highlights Wednesday at the Tattersalls December auction of mares and mixed stock in Newmarket, England.

Group 1-winning racemare Frizzante and the broodmare Ebaraya each brought 500,000 guineas, or about $1,002,750.

The London Thoroughbred Services agency purchased Frizzante, a 5-year-old Efisio mare, for an undisclosed client. Ebaraya, a 5-year-old Sadler's Wells mare sold in foal to Machiavellian, went to Ira Gumberg's Skara Glen Stables, represented by Irish agent John McCormack.

Benoit & Associates
Intercontinental wins the one-mile Matriarch on the Hollywood Park turf after passing the Breeders' Cup Mile.

LAS VEGAS - When it comes to racing class, it has always been about the dam and her entire tail-female line (dam, dam's dam, dam's granddam, etc.). There was never a better example of what class in the dam means than last weekend at Hollywood Park, where three major stakes winners from the same female family raced. Two of them won, while the other finished a strong third off a long layoff and tough trip.

Two good Gill claims target Millions

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Michael Gill, the nation's top owner by wins, moved his California stable to the East Coast last spring, it marked the end of a largely unsuccessful six-month involvement in California racing.

Gill claimed more than 100 horses from October 2003 until May of this year, but had little to show for it. While racing in California, Gill had 18 winners from 153 starters, a 12 percent success rate. When his stable left, Gill admitted that in hindsight he made a lot of bad claims.

Halo's Image star of parade

It was a Florida Chamber of Commerce day, and more than a thousand Florida breeders were on hand for Sunday's Florida Thoroughbred Farm Managers parade of stallions and equine trade show. Thirty-three stallions were shown at the Ocala Equestrian Center, adjacent to the Ocala Breeders' Sales complex.

Halo's Image, Florida's 2004 leading sire by progeny earnings, was named the farm managers' sire of the year.

"It's an honor," said George Isaacs, general manager of Bridlewood Farm, which owns Halo's Image. "He will stand for $10,000 live foal, and he's earned it."

New faces with nice pedigrees

As Ontario breeders begin to choose stallions for their mares for the spring of 2005, a handful of newcomers to the local ranks offer some impressive pedigree lines.

Dance to Destiny, a graded-stakes-placed full brother to Queen's Plate winners Dancethruthedawn and Scatter the Gold, will attract a lot of interest when he begins stud duty at John Brnjas's Colebrook Farms in Uxbridge.
