Record roster of BC foals

A record 15,850 foals were nominated to the Breeders' Cup program in 2004, Breeders' Cup Ltd. announced Thursday. The figure tops the old mark of 15,786 foals nominated in 2000. The 2004 total also is a 5.7 percent increase from 2003. The results do not include Southern Hemisphere foals, which have an April 15 nomination deadline.

Revenue of $8,016,000 was generated by last year's crop, the most since the nomination process began in 1982.

Tizbud to stand in Florida

Tizbud, a full brother to Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow and winner of the 2003 California Cup Classic, will stand the 2005 breeding season at Jubilee Farms in Ocala, Fla., co-owner Michael Cooper said Tuesday.

A son of Cee's Tizzy out of the Seattle Song mare Cee's Song, Tizbud will have a stud fee of $5,000. Cooper said the 6-year-old will leave California for Florida this week.

Record sale in Australia

Australia's Magic Millions yearling auction, which ended its select selling on Sunday, set records for gross receipts and average price.

The four select sessions featured the final yearlings by Danehill, Australia's dominant sire until his death in 2003 at age 17. One of those, a colt out of the winning Diesis mare Silken Whisper, brought the auction's highest price of $950,000 Australian, or about $721,525 U.S. Coolmore agent Demi O'Byrne bought the Danehill colt from Strawberry Hill Stud and said the colt would remain in Australia for his early training.

Even the Score retired to stud

Even the Score, a dual Grade 2 winner for his owner, Ro Parra, has been retired to stud after injuring himself during a workout for the Santa Anita Handicap.

The 7-year-old Unbridled's Song horse will stand at his owner's Millennium Farms in Kentucky for a $5,000 fee.

Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Even the Score won the Grade 2 Californian Stakes and Mervyn LeRoy Handicap in 2004, as well as the 2003 Mardi Gras Handicap.

He retires with a race record of 29-9-1-9 and earnings of $751,629.

Humane Society rescues horses

Two horses have died and four others have been hospitalized because of neglect, the Lexington Humane Society said after raiding Four Winds Farm north of Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday.

Nancy and Kathleen Nygaard operated Four Winds on land leased from Chuck and Shawn Deppen's Hard 8 Farm, according to local media reports.

Middle market key in Keeneland sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland's January all-ages sale opens Monday in Lexington, and middle-market buyers are probably steeling themselves for some hand-to-hand combat in the bidding arena.
