LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland's April 2-year-old auction ended Tuesday night with losses across the board, closing out the season's major select juvenile sales on a glum note.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The major 2-year-old auction season unexpectedly petered out Tuesday at Keeneland's select juvenile sale, where a high buyback rate took sales officials by surprise and prompted sellers to ask, "Where have all the buyers gone?"
LAS VEGAS - The world has turned upside down. What was unimaginable a mere 10 years ago now seems the norm. The last three winners of the Kentucky Derby were by sires characterized by speed with very little stamina, but they had no problem getting 1 1/4 miles.
Dr. Tom Simon's Vinery has bought a majority interest in Grade 1 winner Saratoga County and will stand the Valid Expectations horse at its new facility in Summerfield, Fla., in 2006.
A 4-year-old colt, Saratoga County will continue his 2005 campaign, which owners Richard and Evelyn Pollard hope will culminate with the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Belmont on Oct. 29.
A Saint Ballado filly and a Dynaformer colt topped the work tab Monday at Keeneland's second and final under-tack show for its April 19 select juvenile sale.
Hip No. 112, a Saint Ballado filly out of the unraced Deputy Minister mare Sabu, breezed the day's fastest eighth-mile time of 10.20 seconds. The filly is offered by LMS 2004.
Summer Wind Dancer, who won the Delaware and Hawthorne handicaps last year, has been retired from racing and was bred to Unbridled's Song last month.
Owned by Richard and Yvette Wira and Linda Vetter, Summer Wind Dancer made her final start in the California Cup Matron last October, finishing fourth.
A California-bred, Summer Wind Dancer was found to have suffered a knee injury over the winter. There was hope of sending her back to the track, but the injury was slow to heal, prompting the decision to breed the 5-year-old mare.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - After Sweet Catomine's fifth-place finish in last weekend's Santa Anita Derby, owner Marty Wygod mentioned a physical issue that he thought could have affected the filly's performance. She had come into season for the first time before the race.
That's a fairly common concern. But while a filly who is in season - also called "in heat" or "horsing" - can become somewhat more irritable, veterinarians say estrus generally has little effect on racetrack performance.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland's select 2-year-old auction on Tuesday is the last boutique juvenile auction of the spring, and it will take place in a feast-or-famine marketplace that highlights the risky nature of selling juveniles. The questions for Keeneland are whether the bullish upper market will continue there and whether sellers below that level will fare profitably, too.
Dream of Summer, the California-bred mare who won the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park on April 9, may make a quick return in the $150,000 B. Thoughtful Stakes on the California Gold Rush program at Hollywood Park next Sunday.
Trainer Juan Garcia said Thursday that Dream of Summer has bounced back from her win in the Apple Blossom in outstanding condition, and he would prefer to start her sooner rather than later.
