Freud does well at Fasig-Tipton sale

Youngsters by New York sire Freud continue to be in demand at major Eastern sales, as four of his yearlings averaged a sale price of $158,750 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale on July 18-19 in Lexington.

All four are New York-breds.

Freud, a son of Storm Cat who stands at Lakland North LLC in Hudson, N.Y., did very well at the 2-year-old in training sales earlier this year, with several of his offspring exceeding $300,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company and Fasig-Tipton venues. His stud fee for 2005 was $5,000 live foal.

Ontario auction alumni flash strong resumes

Yearling sales season has arrived, and shoppers can pick up a Canadian-bred youngster beginning Sept. 6, when the Ontario division of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's select sale gets underway at Woodbine. The open sessions of the sale will take place Sept. 9 and 10.

Canadian-breds continue to be popular throughout North America thanks to the success of runners such as Wild Desert, who won this year's Queen's Plate, and King of Jazz, the American-based horse who finished second in the Plate.

Fasig-Tipton figures down from record '04

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's July yearling sale, which ended Tuesday night, could not match the record returns it yielded for the company in 2004.

Led by a $650,000 Giant's Causeway colt, the two-day auction saw strong selling at the top of the market, but middle-class horses got less interest from buyers. Coming off last year's record numbers, the auction posted declines across the board despite its record catalog size, and buy-backs increased from 25 percent to 39 percent.

Upper market healthier on sale's second day

This El Corredor-Meadow Bright colt was the top-priced yearling on Monday, bringing $385,000.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - When consignor David Hager of Idle Hour Farm advised a client, Marion Montanari, to send her handsome chestnut Giant's Causeway colt to Fasig-Tipton's July yearling sale, she wasn't so sure she shouldn't wait for the Keeneland September sale.

But Hager's advice turned out to be sound and profitable for Montanari. The Giant's Causeway colt - the only yearling in the Fasig-Tipton catalog sired by that popular stallion - showed up all the better for his rarity and brought $650,000 as a result.

Talent that has spanned generations

LAS VEGAS - A.P. Warrior was doing so well that trainer Eoin Harty did not wait for Del Mar. Unveiled in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race last Sunday at Hollywood Park, A.P. Warrior drew off to an impressive victory, looking like future stakes material.

A.P. Warrior is one of four pricey babies that Harty has for owner Stan Fulton. Bought for $1.3 million at last September's boutique Keeneland sale, A.P. Warrior is a colt by A.P. Indy out of the Quiet American mare Warrior Queen, a champion 3-year-old filly in England and Ireland.

Small farm hits home run with El Corredor colt

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Thoroughbed breeder and seller Rosilyn Polan got a long-awaited payday at Monday's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. Going into the two-day auction, Polan's best price for a sale horse was, as well as she could recall, somewhere below $100,000. But on Monday afternoon, Polan's colt by El Corredor lit up the price board to the tune of $385,000, giving her Sunday Morning Farm a bona fide home run. California-based owner B. Wayne Hughes signed the ticket.

Record catalog for Fasig-Tipton July

LEXINGTON, Ky. - With the high-flying Keeneland July sale on hiatus for the third consecutive summer, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's July yearling sale on Monday and Tuesday launches the season. When it opens at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington this year, the sale will have a couple of notable distinctions: a record number of horses in the catalog and Grade 1 winner Buzzards Bay as a last-minute special addition.

The 2005 Fasig-Tipton July catalog went to press with 672 lots, up sharply from last year's 492.
