2016 class of new sires continues to shine

On one of the first major racing weekends of 2021, the incoming stallion class of 2016 continued its major success. Colonel Liam, from the first crop of Liam’s Map, won the Grade 1, $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park. One race later, his classmates Tapiture and Constitution were represented by Jesus’ Team and Independence Hall, second and third, respectively, in the Grade 1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup.

Paynter has pair in Pegasus World Cup

Paynter is expected to be represented in the Pegasus World Cup by Knicks Go and Harpers First Ride.

Knicks Go and Harpers First Ride finished their respective 2020 seasons with momentum. They will look to keep up that momentum for their sire, Paynter – a top 20 North American sire for the season – when they start in Saturday’s Grade 1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.

Knicks Go, a Grade 1 winner as a juvenile in 2018, returned to his best form to win his three starts by a combined 21 1/4 lengths in 2020. Most recently, that included a 3 1/2-length score in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 7 at Keeneland, in which he set a track record.

Determined Stud spends big to build broodmare band

The nascent Maryland-based Determined Stud operation continued an active season of buying at the Keeneland January sale, where it was among the programs taking advantage of high-profile dispersals to bolster its stock.

Multiple graded stakes winner Thousand Words has been retired from racing and will enter stud at co-owner Spendthrift Farm, where he will be the latest offering under the farm’s innovative Share the Upside program.

Thousand Words, by classic sire Pioneerof the Nile and out of graded stakes winner Pomeroys Pistol, was a $1 million Keeneland September yearling purchase by Spendthrift and Albaugh Family Stables

Lemon Drop Kid pensioned at Lane's End Farm

Champion and classic winner Lemon Drop Kid, a consistently successful stallion who hails from some of the cornerstone families of Lane's End Farm, has been pensioned and will continue to live out his retirement at his longtime home on that farm. The son of former Lane's End sire Kingmambo is 25 this year.

Thoroughbred Charities of America online stallion season auction begins

Thoroughbred Charities of America's annual stallion season auction, its largest fundraiser, is underway with an altered format this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Online bidding on over 200 seasons for stallions standing in 14 states began online Wednesday and will continue through Friday with staggered ending times. Seasons available in the online auction include consistently prominent sires Ghostzapper, More Than Ready, and Speightstown; successful young stallions Liam’s Map and Palace Malice; Horse of the Year Gun Runner, whose first foals race in 2021; and others.

Horse of the Year Azeri retired as broodmare in Japan at age 23

Azeri, shown winning the 2002 Breeders' Cup Distaff, was voted that year's Horse of the Year and the first of three consecutive Eclipse Awards as champion older female.

Champion and Hall of Fame racemare Azeri has been pensioned from her broodmare career in Japan.
