Smiling Tiger continues climb up California's stallion ranks

From his first four crops, Smiling Tiger has sired 14 stakes winners, topped by Grade 1-winning millionaire Spiced Perfection. He covered 102 mares in 2020.

Smiling Tiger made his name on the racetracks of California, becoming a multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire. He has stood his entire stallion career in the Golden State and is becoming one of the leading sires for the region that made him.

Smiling Tiger, a 13-year-old son of Hold That Tiger, entered stud at Premier Equine Center in Oakdale in 2014. The following year, he moved to Harris Farms in Coalinga, and has resided at that notable facility ever since.

Heartwood among the new faces in California stallion ranks

Heartwood will race in two Grade 2 stakes at Santa Anita before being retired to stud at Rancho San Miguel.

The well-traveled Heartwood is scheduled to begin a stud career at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif., early next year. By the time Heartwood reaches the central California farm, he could have a significantly enhanced race record.

Reddams search for the next Square Eddie begins with three younger stallions

Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another will stand his first season at Ocean Breeze Ranch for $10,000. His oldest American foals will be yearlings in 2021.

The next few years will be a period of change for the massive racing and breeding stable of Paul and Zillah Reddam, who have one of the best known operations in modern California racing.

The transition centers on a revamped list of stallions for the upcoming breeding season. In May, the Reddams announced that Square Eddie, their top stallion at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif., had been retired from stud duty because of infertility.

Southern Phantom to stand stud in Virginia

Southern Phantom will stand at stud in 2021 at Mountain View Equine in Steels Tavern, Va.

Southern Phantom will begin his stud career next year in his father’s home state of Virginia.

The uniquely marked son of Virginia-bred Bodemeister will stand at Mountain View Equine in Steels Tavern, according to Danny Caldwell, who owns Southern Phantom with his wife, Allison.

“We felt like it was a central location on the East Coast,” Danny Caldwell said. “We felt like that was the best place for him to go to breed different breeds of horses.”

Tapizar euthanized after stable accident

Tapizar, the sire of Monomoy Girl, was euthanized after an accident in his stall.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar, the sire of Eclipse Award champion Monomoy Girl, has died in a stable accident.

Gainesway Farm, which stood the 12-year-old Tapit horse, said Tapizar was euthanized after sustaining an injury in an accident in his stall in its quarantine barn. The stallion was scheduled to stand in Japan in 2021, with plans to arrive at Yushun Stallion Station on Hokkaido in mid-January.

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Awesome Again dies at 26

Awesome Again, pictured at Old Friends in November, died Tuesday at the age of 26.

Frank Stronach’s homebred Canadian Hall of Famer Awesome Again, the sire of multiple champions and classic winners, died Tuesday at Old Friends in Georgetown, Ky. The son of Deputy Minister was 26. The exact cause of death is unknown, with a full necropsy pending.

Grade 1 winner and young sire Competitive Edge has been purchased by Douglas Scharbauer to stand at Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas. The son of Super Saver had stood at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud.

Normandy Invasion pensioned in order to change careers

Normandy Invasion will probably run in a stakes next out.

Grade 1-placed Normandy Invasion has been pensioned from stallion duty and gelded in order to pursue a career as a sporthorse. The 10-year-old son of Tapit has been placed with the National Thoroughbred Welfare Organization, an aftercare group founded by Normandy Invasion’s racetrack owner, Rick Porter.

Instilled Regard's book to include Blue Prize, Concrete Rose

Instilled Regard ended his racing career with a victory in the Grade 1 Manhattan at Belmont.

Grade 1 winner Instilled Regard has been retired from racing, and while particulars of his stallion career, such as a farm and stud fee, have yet to be announced, one thing is sure – he will get a solid first book in 2021.
