This past week marked the end of the Sherman family's connection to Ocala's Farnsworth Farms. Robert Miller's Main Street Management bought the farm's land, building, and name from the Farnsworth family trust.
Allen's Prospect racked up big numbers during his long reign as Maryland's leading sire. He has been gone for nearly three years - the highly fertile son of Mr. Prospector was euthanized in September 2003 at age 21, after developing a fast-growing tumor under his jaw. He remains, however, a formidable presence on the state's sire lists.
Gabe's Prospect, a 3-year-old filly from Allen's Prospect's next-to-last crop (which consisted of 62 foals), became her sire's 67th stakes winner when she won the Penny Ridge Stakes at Stampede Park on June 18.
Hall of Fame mare Paseana, North America's champion older female in 1992 and 1993, has died in Argentina at age 18.
Owner Sidney Craig said Thursday that he was notified by the farm Haras san Ignacio de la Hoya, where Paseana boarded, that the mare had died of natural causes on Monday. An Argentine-bred, Paseana was foaled on the Southern Hemisphere breeding calendar on Aug. 23, 1987.
Florida's 2-year-olds in training sale season has its final round beginning Tuesday. The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s June sale has cataloged 460 2-year-olds for its two-day auction. This sale differs from the prior 2-year-old sales in that it has a component for older racehorses. There are 17 of these older horses cataloged and they, too, must go under tack for prospective buyers. Starting time for both sale sessions is 10:30 a.m.
Juveniles by New York stallion Freud, who is ranked nationally as a second-crop sire, are among the more than 40 statebreds cataloged to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company auction on Tuesday and Wednesday in Florida. Selling begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum, the owner of Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, has about 1,500 horses in his breeding and racing program. But he still sifts through the sales in search of quality stock to add to his empire each season. That is how he came by Jazil, a $725,000 Keeneland September yearling in 2004.
