Bold Executive progeny tops in earnings

When Arctic Laur, Executive Flight, and Kick'em Jenny finished first, second, and third in Wednesday night's Passing Mood Stakes on the Woodbine turf course, it wasn't just another neat feat for top Canadian sire Bold Executive.

The winner, Arctic Laur, a 3-year-old filly bred by Hope Stock Farm, became the 22-year-old stallion's 30th stakes winner and third of 2006.

Bold Executive, a Canadian stakes winner and a son of longtime leading sire Bold Ruckus, has a slight edge on this country's stallion list by progeny earnings, siring the earners of $1.47 million.

But the colt means the world to Douglas Brown and his family's Little Man Farm, a small breeding operation in Keymar, Md. Arson ruled out in JEH barn fire

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Arson was not the cause of a June 6 barn fire that killed 1997 Horse of the Year Favorite Trick and five other stallions at the JEH Stallion Station in New Mexico, investigators have said.

"We've eliminated any criminal intent," New Mexico's state fire marshal, Joe Chavez, told the Ruidoso News. "We now have engineers in there to see what they can tell us about the actual cause of the fire."

Success comes fast for several freshman sires

Graeme Hall's dam is a half-sister to the stakes-winning sprinter and miler Diligence.

First Samurai is retired

First Samurai, who has been sidelined with cracked ribs since the April 15 Blue Grass Stakes, has been retired from racing and will stand in 2007 at Claiborne Farm.

"We had planned to retire First Samurai at the end of the season, but as it became clear that we did not have enough time to achieve our major objectives, we made the decision to stop on him now," said Bruce Lunsford, who campaigned First Samurai with Lansdon Robbins III.

ClassicStar dispersing at F-T

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky will conduct a dispersal of about 90 broodmares owned by ClassicStar at its November mixed sale in Lexington, Ky., the auction house announced Tuesday.

That will be the first of two expected broodmare dispersals by ClassicStar.

ClassicStar has not yet finalized its list of mares on offer, pending pregnancy checks, said Fasig-Tipton's marketing director, Terence Collier.
