It's not every day that a horse wins for the first time in a stakes race. But Bertram Linder, now 91, has seen just about everything. So when the 2-year-old filly Naseem, whom Linder co-bred with Caesar Kimmel, Philip Solondz, and the Thoroughbred Corp., accomplished the feat at Calder on Sept. 2 in the Lindsay Frolic Stakes, it was not something new for the legendary breeder.

"This is the second time it has happened to me," recalled Linder. "I had a colt - can't remember his name right now - who won the San Felipe."

Dual Grade 1 winner Borrego, who enters stud this year at Wintergreen Stallion Station near Midway, Ky., will stand for $20,000 in 2007.

Borrego recently arrived at Wintergreen and is available for viewing beginning at 11 a.m. daily during the Keeneland September sale.

Tuesday's Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association summer yearling sale saw 153 yearlings change hands for $2,355,800, an average price of $15,397. The gross was down 12.6 percent from last year's summer sale, and the average was down 14.3 percent.

Contributing to the declines was an increase in the number of yearlings who did not reach their reserves, from 43 last year to 52 at Tuesday's sale. This list included the would-be sale topper, a Smoke Glacken colt, who did not reach his reserve despite receiving a bid for $77,000.

A $250,000 colt by Hold that Tiger headlined the select session of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's annual yearling sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Tuesday.

Winsong Farm purchased the sale topper from Woodlands' Gail Wood, who was the agent for owner Bill Diamant. The colt is out of the Forty Niner mare Brittan Lee, the dam of four winners. Hold that Tiger, a freshman sire by Storm Cat, was Europe's champion 2-year-old in 2002.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to progress in his healing and could have another cast change on his broken right hind leg in the next fortnight, his surgeon said Tuesday.

"Barbaro is wearing the new cast satisfactorily," said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center equine hospital. "We continue to monitor him closely, and, depending on how he progresses, we may change it again within the next two weeks."

LAS VEGAS - Circular Quay, a son of Thunder Gulch, was impressive in his first two victories, a maiden race and the Bashford Manor Stakes, but his Hopeful Stakes victory on Monday at Saratoga catapulted him to the head of the 2-year-old class.

The Del Mar Futurity, featuring some very promising juveniles, was scheduled for Wednesday, but the outcome of that race does not matter. Circular Quay is still superior.
