King of the Roxy has exceeded expectations

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Victory in the historic Grade 2 Futurity Stakes has propelled King of the Roxy into a position among the elite 2-year-old colts focusing on the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Obviously a talented colt with speed and courage, King of the Roxy has not always been viewed as one of the select. As a son of a stallion standing for $3,500, the Ohio-bred colt was shunted into the final day of the Keeneland September yearling sale last year, and as the third yearling through the ring that day, he brought only $8,000, a sum that disheartened his breeder, Debbie Kopatz.

Cal-bred interest key to Barretts sale

It takes a choosy selection process to find the 327 yearlings cataloged for Tuesday's California October yearling sale at Barretts in Pomona, Calif., according to Doug Burge of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association and Gerald McMahon of the Barretts Sale Company.

From more than 600 nominations, the two executives and their inspection team have narrowed the list to a group of yearlings that they think will lead to higher prices at the one-day sale, which is considered the premier yearling sale in the state.

Baker's dozen of new sires represented

Ocala was sort of a ghost town for the past several weeks, with so many locals away attending the Keeneland yearling sales. Starting Monday, Oct. 9, the focus shifts from yearling sales to the five-day Ocala Breeers' Sales mixed auction. The OBS has cataloged 1,723 lots. The three catalogs list a combined 819 weanlings and 832 broodmares. The 37 yearlings cataloged will lead the Thursday, Oct. 12, session.

New owners syndicate off and running

Owner Tim Orlando is an enthusiastic member of the local Thoroughbred industry and, as a director of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, he wants to help pass along the excitement of racehorse ownership to new people.

Orlando is spearheading the New Owners Syndicate Program, sponsored and initiated by the CTHS, and the first syndicate group is already sold out.

"We're off to a flying start," said Orlando, who races his own horses under the Horsepower Stable moniker.

In just 10 days, Keeneland tops world record

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Keeneland September two-week yearling sale won't end until Monday, but already it has set a world record for gross sales.

The auction's bottom line was boosted this year by a record 5,161-yearling catalog. That allowed the company on Thursday to break its own record, set in 2005. At the end of that day, 2,601 yearlings had sold for $385,707,000, beating last year's entire sale total and record gross of $384,349,900 for 2,640 head.

Perseverance defines Wanderin Boy's story

Wanderin Boy reached a peak when he won the Brooklyn Handicap on Sept. 16. A 5-year-old by Seeking the Gold, he has overcome several obstacles in his path to grab a Grade 2 victory at Belmont Park and fortify his prospects as a future stallion.

As a very young foal, Wanderin Boy was injured while out in a paddock, and vets believed he would never even race. To disprove their doubts, Wanderin Boy has trod a difficult path that has made his story and even his name more fascinating.

Dynasty started by an unlikely candidate

"From every generation there seems to emerge a powerful sprinter," said Robert Goldsmith when discussing the family of the illustrious Maryland producer Turn Capp. Representing the next generation on Sept. 16 at Laurel Park was Your Flame in Me, a 2-year-old filly making her stakes debut in the Gin Talking Stakes for Maryland-breds.
