Shakespeare brings local ties to Woodbine

The return of Grade 1 winner Shakespeare to the races, in particular in Sunday's $1 million Woodbine Mile, brings to mind his dam's big win at Woodbine in 1991.

Lady Shirl led from start to finish winning the E.P. Taylor Stakes as the favorite for Noel Hickey's Irish Acres Farm, which was essentially considered a local outfit since Hickey raced a stable of horses at Woodbine.

And Garrett Gomez, who rode Lady Shirl that afternoon, will partner with Shakespeare, the morning-line favorite in the Woodbine Mile.

Live Oak's resurgence continues

It has been four decades since Charlotte Weber motored to Ocala from her Florida retreat in Hope Sound. The purpose of her trip was to visit her close friend Peter A. Widener III. They were neighbors in Philadelphia.

Widener had an Ocala estate that he had named Live Oak Plantation. The 4,000 or more acres was home to deer, rabbits, foxes, and other animals that one usually finds in forests. It was also the home of a modest breeding operation. The Wideners of that era were still ranked among the elite of racing.

Lawyer Ron's earnings potential still growing

Cal-breds skipping Kentucky for local sales

The mammoth Keeneland September yearling sale, which runs from Tuesday through Sept. 25 and comprises 5,553 yearlings, will be held largely without California-breds this year.

Last year, 35 California-breds were cataloged, with 20 selling for an average of $32,410. The most expensive yearling among the group was an In Excess filly purchased for $110,000. She has yet to start.

This year, there are only 14 California-breds in the sale and most are sired by stallions that stand in Kentucky. Only four California-based stallions are represented in the yearling group.
