Beginning Monday, the Keeneland Association will sell approximately five times as many yearlings as were sold at the August Ocala Breeders' Sales auction. The numbers were positive at the Ocala auction. The average price for the 1,319 yearlings sold in the five combined selected and open sessions rose a fraction to $19,817, while the median was up 5.8 percent, to $9,500.
New York stallions Read the Footnotes and Ten Most Wanted, who both stand at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson, are represented by first-crop yearlings at this week's Keeneland sale.
The Keeneland September yearling sale begins Monday and concludes on Sept. 25.
Among the five by Read the Footnotes in the catalog is a New York-bred filly out of Sultry Secret, by Nijinsky, from the consignment of Burleson Farms LLC, agent.
Sultry Secret is a half-sister to Grade 1 millionaires Sultry Song and Solar Splendor, as well as Grade 3 winner Strategic Mission.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Following his impressive victories in the Grade 1 Whitney and Woodward stakes, Lawyer Ron has become the leading older horse in the country, and as part and parcel of that status, he has made himself a much more valuable stallion when he retires to stud.
When he retires, Lawyer Ron will stand at Stonewall Stallions in Kentucky. Stonewall bought a majority interest in the chestnut son of the Danzig stallion Langfuhr in 2006 before Lawyer Ron started in the Kentucky Derby.
The mammoth Keeneland September yearling sale, which runs from Tuesday through Sept. 25 and comprises 5,553 yearlings, will be held largely without California-breds this year.
Last year, 35 California-breds were cataloged, with 20 selling for an average of $32,410. The most expensive yearling among the group was an In Excess filly purchased for $110,000. She has yet to start.
This year, there are only 14 California-breds in the sale and most are sired by stallions that stand in Kentucky. Only four California-based stallions are represented in the yearling group.
Eager anticipation. Heart-pounding tension. Jaw-dropping results. It's not only the races that can stir the senses. Watching elite yearlings go through the auction ring also creates excitement, and the first days of Keeneland's 15-day September yearling sale offer the biggest fireworks of year.
Three Maryland-bred yearlings - a colt and two fillies - can be seen on the first day of the sale Monday, the first of two days that HRTV will telecast live, beginning at 10 a.m.
