LEXINGTON, Ky. - With his victory in the Grade 1 Hollywood Turf Cup at 12 furlongs, the Saint Ballado colt Sunriver has both improved his race record and his prospects as a stallion with an important success at the premier level.

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. recently hosted a seminar dealing with all-weather tracks in general and the new OBS all-weather Safetrack in particular. OBS is the second facility in Florida to install Safetrack. Ocala-based Goldmark Farm was the first.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Proud Tower Too, the winner of the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in 2005 and the $2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai in 2006, has been retired because of a recurring tendon injury, trainer Sal Gonzalez said Friday.

Owned and bred by Daniel Cardenas's Tricar Stables, Proud Tower Too won 7 of 22 starts and $1,735,572. The 5-year-old horse was in training with Gonzalez at Sunland Park in New Mexico this fall when the injury was detected. Proud Tower Too finished second in the Grade 2 San Carlos Handicap in February in his final start.

It has been almost 10 years since Eugene Melnyk won his first, and only, Sovereign Award with Archers Bay, the champion 3-year-old colt of 1998.

A lot has happened with the Melnyk Racing Stables since then, including the formation of a high-class breeding operation to go along with its racing stable.

Melnyk is nominated for this year's Sovereign Award as Canada's outstanding owner and breeder, and his homebred 3-year-old filly Sealy Hill is a shoo-in for championship honors in her category when the 33rd Sovereign Awards are held Dec. 14.

Steve's Double got his third win - and second stakes victory - in a row, prevailing by three-quarters of a length in the $60,000 Tenacious Handicap last Saturday at Fair Grounds.

Facing older rivals for the first time, he toted high weight of 118 pounds, giving four pounds to the runner-up, 8-5 favorite Crossword, and completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.74. It was the first time he had been tested beyond a mile.

Smooth Jazz has arrived at Buckridge Farm in Chatham, N.Y., where he will stand the 2008 breeding season for a fee of $3,000.

A son of Storm Boot who is the property of a syndicate, Smooth Jazz stood last year at Cloverleaf Farms II in Florida.

Smooth Jazz won the Grade 2 Commonwealth Breeders' Cup in 2003, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 117. He also won the Best Turn Stakes at Aqueduct and retired with earnings of $321,105, with a record of 5-0-1 in 11 starts.

OCALA, Fla. - Marion County farms have another round of stallion showings Saturday. The purpose of these stallion showcases is to reacquaint breeders with resident stallions and introduce new stallions that will be entering stud in 2008. Saturday's stallion shows include Lambholm South, Vinery, and Journeyman Stud.

Lambholm South will present seven stallions at its noon to 3 p.m. showing: Alysweep, Leading the Parade, Express Tour, Max's Pal, Safe in the USA, Lido Palace, and Agnes Gold.

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's two-day December mixed sale in Timonium, Md., ended Monday with mixed results as gross and average fell but median gained.

The auction sold 287 horses for $2,056,500, a decline of 23 percent from last year's sale, when 338 horses sold. The 2007 average price dropped 10 percent, from $7,924 to $7,166. But median price rose by 9 percent, climbing from $3,200 to $3,500. The buy-back rate also increased from last season's 34 percent to 39 percent.
