Russians step up U.S. sale activity

LEXINGTON, Ky. - There has been a noticeable increase in Russian buying activity this year at the Keeneland September yearling sale. That's due partly to increasing entrepreneurial wealth in the former Soviet Union and partly to the region's rapidly developing racing and breeding industry, according to bloodstock adviser Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, a consultant helping Russia's agriculture ministry reorganize the country's stud book and racetrack network.

Bowman's Band gets stakes winner

After Tropical Storm Hanna dumped two inches of rain in the area and forced Laurel Park's Gin Talking Stakes off the turf on Sept. 6, the sun came out during the running of the race. For Carol Kaye-Garcia, it was almost a sign that the late Jim Glenn was watching.

Splashing through the stretch 6 3/4 lengths in front as the sun beamed off her chestnut coat was Miss Charm City, a 2-year-old Bowman's Band filly bred by Glenn. Trained by Carol's husband Carlos Garcia and owned in the name of Glenn's estate, Miss Charm City scored her second dominating win in as many starts.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - On a day when million-dollar fillies dominated the Keeneland September yearling sale's opening session Monday, the big story turned out to be about one of the buybacks. And not just any "reserve not attained," either: This was an A.P. Indy colt whose $7.7 million price fell below his undisclosed minimum asking price, making him the most expensive buyback in Keeneland's history.
