At new barn, Singletary also at crossroads

Five years after the biggest win of his career, the Breeders' Cup Mile, Singletary faces a pivotal year as a stallion in 2009.

His first 2-year-olds, a crop of 46, will reach the racetrack this year, and the success of those horses will determine how much enthusiasm breeders show for the stallion next year.

Singletary also has switched farms. He is standing his first season at Harris Farms, near Coalinga, Calif., having previously stood at Cardiff Stud Farm in Atascadero, Calif.

Singletary stands for $2,500, and has been bred to a small book of mares.

High end can't erase Ocala declines

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March select 2-year-old auction, which enjoyed double-digit gains and record returns last year, ended Wednesday with double-digit losses that were roughly in line with the rest of the 2009 select juvenile market.

As at the opener on Tuesday, Wednesday's session was marred by 97 outs and 40-percent buy-backs but also showed some strength at the top end.

Indian Charlie filly tops OBS Day 1

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March select 2-year-old sale opened Tuesday with declines across the board between 20 percent and 36 percent. But it also produced some signs that a variety of buyers are still shopping for racehorses, whatever the newspapers and economists are saying about the global financial climate.

Ghostzapper colt tops Adena Springs sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Adena Springs 2-year-old sale in Williston, Fla., sported a smaller catalog of 70 horses this year and closed with declines in gross and average.

All of the horses were consigned by Adena Springs, which hosted the auction at its Florida farm in Williston.

Hancock proud of Menifee's success

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The stallion Menifee had a big weekend. On Sunday, two of his fillies, 3-year-old Just Jenda and 4-year-old Game Face, hit the winner's circle within an hour of each other.

Game Face scored her second victory in three meetings with rival Any Limit when she won the Grade 2 Inside Information Stakes at Gulfstream. Just Jenda was an easy three-length winner in Oaklawn's Grade 3 Honeybee on her way to the April 5 Fantasy Stakes and a possible shot at the Kentucky Oaks.

Modest workout doesn't hurt sale topper

POMONA, Calif. - The sale topper at the Barretts March sale of select 2-year-olds in training last Tuesday lacked one thing common in many highly regarded sale prospects - a blisteringly fast pre-sale workout.

Instead of blazing through a one-furlong breeze in less than 10 seconds or a sub-21-second time for two furlongs, the Tiznow colt purchased by Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stable for $650,000 was timed in 10.60 seconds for a furlong on March 5. The time equaled the 36th-fastest of 84 workouts for the distance.

$650K Tiznow colt tops Barretts sale

POMONA, Calif. - Tuesday's Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds in training finished with a 30 percent decline in average price, putting it in line with the two major Florida sales conducted last month.

The one-day Barretts sale saw 50 horses sell for $6,263,000, an average of $125,260 and a median of $80,000, a 27 percent decline from last year. The sale-topper was a Tiznow colt purchased by Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stable for $650,000.

The lower average and median were not a surprise to sale company officials, who feared a poor economy would hamper the sale.

Stallion owners getting creative

LEXINGTON, Ky. - With breeding season in full swing, the word of the day for many stallion owners and managers is "flexibility" as they market their stallions in a buyers' market for stud services. While a number of top stallions are still commanding substantial books of mares, some stud managers say horses at a range of fees are seeing somewhat smaller books, requiring creative promotions and fee reductions.
