Fasig-Tipton brings back sale

Fasig-Tipton, which announced last month that it would not hold its Kentucky October yearling sale, has reversed that decision after feedback from "several October consignors and buyers," according to a release issued Wednesday.

The auction will now take place at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 26-28.

"We certainly value the feedback that our customers shared with us," said Fasig-Tipton's chairman, Walt Robertson. "One of the main goals of the company will always be to listen and react to what is important for our customers."

Snow Dance euthanized at 11

John and Debby Oxley's multiple Grade 2 winner Snow Dance was euthanized on March 28 at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute after colic surgery.

An 11-year-old Forest Wildcat mare, Snow Dance was in foal to Street Cry when she died.

Mixed results at Texas sale

Fasig-Tipton's Texas 2-year-old sale ended Tuesday with mixed results, but a new buyer from Dubai and a steady average gave sale officials something to celebrate.

The one-day auction at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Tex., saw a 14 percent decline in gross receipts and a 36 percent drop in median, while the average price rose very slightly, by $40, to $17,201. The session grossed $2,477,000 from 144 horses sold, with a median of $9,650. That's compared with last year's $2,883,000 gross for 168 juveniles and a 2008 median of $15,000.

$170K colt leads Texas sale

There were some positive signs in a gloomy economy Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton's Texas 2-year-old sale at Lone Star Park.

The single-day sale was still under way at 5:30 p.m. with a $170,000 session-leader. That a was Hip No. 94, a Yankee Gentleman colt out of Carrena Rose, by Carr de Naskra. Currently named Gentle Moment, the bay colt is out of a stakes-placed mare and is a half-brother to the Richter Scale winner Gilded Rose. Ragin Cajun Stable purchased the colt from Asmussen Horse Center, agent.

Two fillies fastest at Texas preview

A pair of fillies by Officer and Be Like Mike topped the work tab Sunday at Fasig-Tipton's Texas 2-year-old auction under-tack show in Grand Prairie, Tex.

The workouts were at Lone Star Park in advance of the March 31 auction there.

Hip Nos. 43 and 103 had the fastest eighth-mile works in 10.20 seconds. Hip No. 43 is by Officer out of Taylor's Queen, and Hip No. 103 is by Be Like Mike out of Classy Me.

Ontario approves $20M in incentives

The Ontario Racing Commission has approved a $20.9 million budget for the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program, which provides incentives and rewards for the province's racing and breeding programs.

The budget includes a 5 percentage point increase in the Ontario-bred purse bonus, which was inaugurated last year and has been increased from 10 percent to 15 percent. More than $6.1 million will be available to be won by eligible Ontario-breds in open races.

There also is $3 million available for breeders awards and $400,000 in stallion awards.

Lil E. Tee flawed yet priceless

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lil E. Tee, the 1992 Kentucky Derby winner who died on March 18, was not the most commercially successful stallion, as Old Frankfort Stud owner Jim Plemmons freely admits. That didn't bother Plemmons as much as you might expect, in an age when a stallion's place at a farm usually depends heavily on his moneymaking ability.

Two Cal-bred stakes winners retired

Christiana's Heat and Lucky J.H., California-breds who won stakes on the hillside turf course earlier at the Santa Anita meeting, have been retired after sustaining injuries.

Lucky J.H., the winner of 8 of 20 starts and $632,065, recently suffered a suspensory injury, according to trainer Carla Gaines. The injury was detected a few days after Lucky J.H. worked five furlongs in 59 seconds at Santa Anita on March 20. Lucky J.H. was being prepared for a start in Sunday's $125,000 Sensational Star Handicap for statebreds when the injury was diagnosed.

Jackson seeks revision of California law

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Stonestreet Stables owner Jess Jackson is seeking revisions to California law covering dual agency and horse sales.

Jackson-supported Senate Bill 254 would widen the law to include show horses and would allow prevailing parties in sale-related lawsuits to collect their legal expenses, as well as triple damages. State senator Pat Wiggins introduced the bill on Feb. 24.

Evangeline sale numbers down

Taylor's Tiger, by the young sire Roar of the Tiger, was the sale-topper at Sunday's John Franks Memorial 2-year-old in training sale at Evangeline Downs. Midwest Thoroughbred paid $77,000 for the accredited Louisiana-bred colt, who was consigned by Southwind Farm.

Sold as Hip No. 121, he is out the multiple winning and producing Salt Lake mare Salty Suzy.

Midwest Thoroughbred also bought the highest priced filly at the sale - Hip No. 147, by More Than Ready out of Nokia, by Theatrical - for $62,000.
