Eight shade 10 seconds at OBS

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Eight 2-year-olds breezed eighth-miles in 9.80 seconds Saturday at the final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's under-tack preview for the upcoming spring juvenile sale.

That was the fastest time posted for the distance on Saturday at the under-tack show in Ocala, Fla.

Bull Market filly fastest in Ocala's third session

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A Bull Market filly was fastest over a quarter-mile Friday at Day 3 of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s under-tack show in Ocala, Fla

The sessions showcase horses for sale at the April 20-23 spring 2-year-old sale at the facility.

The Bull Market filly, Hip No. 707, worked a quarter in 20.40 seconds as the afternoon's fastest worker at the distance. Currently named Morning Price, she is a dark bay or brown daughter of the Relaunch mare Stock Price.

Georgie Boy top star for Gold Rush

Georgie Boy's perfect year has a chance to continue in the $150,000 Tiznow Stakes on California Gold Rush Day at Hollywood Park next Saturday.

A winner of two stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year - the Sunshine Millions Dash and the Grade 2 San Carlos - Georgie Boy is the best-known name among the probable starters for the 10-race Gold Rush program for statebreds.

Garrett Gomez, Georgie's Boy's regular rider, is scheduled to ride.

Filly tops second OBS under-tack show

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Forbidden Apple filly Garden Cider posted a sizzling 9.6-second workout Thursday to lead eighth-mile times at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s under-tack preview.

The session was the second of four showcasing horses in the April 20-23 spring 2-year-old auction at the Ocala, Fla., sale company.

Garden Cider will sell as Hip No. 692 at the sale. The bay filly is out of the Halo mare Stacie's Halo, and Bridlewood Farm is the consignor.

Commentator honored as best New York-bred

Commentator, for the second time in four years, has been voted New York-bred Horse of the Year and champion statebred older male by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders' Association.

Commentator's spectacular 7-year-old campaign included victories in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs, and the Grade 2 Richter Scale Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Commentator, a gelded son of Distorted Humor owned by Tracy Farmer, bred by Michael Martinez, and trained by Nick Zito, won these same awards in 2005.

Samantha Miss brings record Australasian price

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Inglis Easter select broodmare sale ended its run Thursday in Australia with more proof that high-quality broodmare prospects still command top dollar, even in a severe recession that has contributed to steep price drops.

Multiple Group 1 winner Samantha Miss topped the three-day auction Thursday in Sydney when she brought $3,850,000 Australian. Inglis reported that the price, about $2,772,000 in U.S. funds, was an Australasian record for a broodmare prospect.

Australian broodmare sale shows sharp declines

Australia's Inglis Easter select broodmare sale ended its second day Wednesday with the steep declines that have been common at other Thoroughbred sales recently.

The three-day 2009 select sale has been affected by the slumping economy, but its financial figures also are suffering by comparison with last year's two-day auction, when the much-anticipated Swettenham Stud dispersal yielded record results. The 52 Swettenham mares sold for a total of about $8,087,400 last season.

OBS previews postponed

The under-tack previews for the upcoming sale of 2-year-olds in training by the Ocala Breeders Sales Company have been postponed a day because of heavy rainstorms in the Ocala, Fla., area.

Originally scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, the four days of under-tack shows will now begin Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Storms have been coming through the area overnight and are expected to continue throughout the day, with Marion County under a tornado watch until 2p.m., the sale company s general manager, Tom Ventura, said in a press release Tuesday.
