Dam of Hall of Famer Tom Bowling may be even better than she looks

The horse Tom Bowling was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Friday via the historic review process. His induction represented another impressive accomplishment for his dam, whose impressive record may be even brighter than it appears. The accomplishments of several of her foals are obscured due to name and breed registry changes that would be unheard of in modern racing.

Gun Runner has Grade 2 winners on both coasts

Pappacap received a Beyer Speed Figure of 70 in winning the Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday.

Horse of the Year Gun Runner succeeded from coast to coast, with six Grade 1 tallies including the Whitney and Woodward at Saratoga and the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar. A freshman sire, Gun Runner was represented by graded stakes winners at both Saratoga and Del Mar over the weekend.

Fittingly, a Tapit colt gives Asmussen the wins record

Steve Asmussen takes Stellar Tap for a turn after he gave him a record-setting 9,446th victory Saturday at Saratoga.

There could hardly have been a sire more appropriate to give trainer Steve Asmussen a record victory than Tapit. The Hall of Fame trainer became North America’s all-time career wins leader on Saturday at Saratoga when the Tapit colt Stellar Tap won on debut. The victory gave Asmussen 9,446 wins, moving him one ahead of the late Dale Baird.

Pin Oak Stud to disperse majority of its stock at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky mixed sale

Darley champion and top sire Bernardini euthanized at 18

Bernardini, the champion 3-year-old of 2006 and with progeny earnings of almost $100 million, was euthanized due to the complications of laminitis.

Eclipse Award champion and prominent sire Bernardini has been euthanized due to complications of laminitis, the international Darley stallion operation of Sheikh Mohammed announced Friday morning.

One of the best sons of breed-shaping sire A.P. Indy, Bernardini was 18 at the time of his death. He was bred and raised by the Darley operation in the early years of Sheikh Mohammed’s ownership of Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., and returned to live out his stallion career there.

Live Oak Stud's Win Approval, dam of two champions, euthanized at 29

Blue hen Win Approval, a foundation mare for Live Oak Stud who produced two Eclipse Award champions to run in Charlotte Weber’s red and white colors, was euthanized July 19 due to the infirmities of old age. She was 29.

“She will be missed, but never forgotten,” Weber said in a press release.

Florida-bred Win Approval, by Canadian Horse of the Year With Approval and out of Live Oak’s graded stakes-placed homebred Negotiator, was foaled in 1992. She won twice from 16 starts while trained by Pat Kelly, winning a maiden and allowance race at Monmouth Park.
