Average price up at Texas sale

A weanling filly by Valid Expectations topped the Fasig-Tipton Texas winter mixed sale on Monday when she brought a bid of $19,000 from Hugh Fitzsimons. The auction, which featured breeding stock and racing prospects, was held at Lone Star Park.

A total of 74 horses sold for $245,300, for an average of $3,315 and a median of $2,500. There were 25 horses who did not sell. The median price was up 12.6 percent from the corresponding auction last year, when 104 horses sold for $306,300, or an average of $2,945 and a median of $1,800. There were 91 horses that did not sell.

Lee Eaton, breeder, dies at 76

Lee Eaton, the founder of Eaton Sales Agency and the co-breeder of 1976 Kentucky Derby winner Bold Forbes, died on Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., of natural causes, according to reports. Eaton was 76.

Whatsthescript to stand for $4K

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Whatsthescript, the winner of 6 of 19 starts and $907,964, will enter stud at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, Calif., next year, the farm announced earlier this week.

Whatsthescript is currently in training with John Sadler. A 5-year-old by Royal Applause, Whatsthescript won five stakes, including two Grade 2 stakes in 2008, the American and Del Mar Mile handicaps on turf. During that season, he was second in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Handicap and third in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - For the second time this decade, Don Van owns the horse of a lifetime.

In 2003, he and a few partners claimed Moscow Burning for $25,000 at Bay Meadows. Over the next three years, she earned more than $1 million and was named the California-bred Horse of the Year for 2004.

Tattersalls sale ends with gross, average down

The Tattersalls December mares sales at Newmarket, England, concluded on Thursday with slight declines in average price and gross receipts but a strong increase in median.

After four days of selling, 628 mares went through the ring for gross receipts of 33,197,700 guineas, or approximately $57.9 million, compared to gross receipts of 33,355,150 guineas last year on the sale of 610 mares.

Terry, of Domino Stud, dead at 91

Warren B. Terry, a highly successful Lexington businessman who owned Domino Stud in central Kentucky for 18 years, died on Wednesday at a local health-care facility. Terry was 91.

Terry purchased the 380 acres that would become Domino in 1971, about four years after acquiring two other farms in central Kentucky. In 1979, he purchased another 180-acre property that he called Domino Stud No. Two.

Dubai blinks, Kentucky winces

LEXINGTON, Ky. - News on Nov. 25 that Dubai World, the investment arm of the emirate of Dubai, had requested a six-month postponement of payments on $59 billion in debt sent tremors through global financial markets. Investors and analysts worried that a Dubai debt default could set back a global financial recovery. In Lexington, the news spooked the microeconomy of commercial Thoroughbred breeding, too.

Piste Noire, an unraced 3-year-old filly owned by Juddmonte Farms with a deep pedigree, sold for 340,000 guineas, or approximately $594,000, to top the third session of the Tattersalls December mare sale in England on Wednesday.

Lido Palace moving to Pennsylvania

Lido Palace, the 12-year-old sire of Grade 1 winner Vineyard Haven, is being moved from Lambholm South in Reddick, Fla., to Northview Stallion Station in Pennsylvania for the 2010 season and will stand for $3,000 live foal, according to Northview.

Kentucky Bear tops CTHS sale

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The stallion prospect Kentucky Bear brought $100,000 to top the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's annual winter mixed sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Saturday.

Bear Stable and partner purchased Kentucky Bear, a Grade 1-placed 4-year-old, who was campaigned by Bear Stable. Cara Bloodstock, as agent, consigned the son of Mr. Greeley and stakes winner Tate.

The highest-priced broodmare was Keys to Heaven, who was sold for $23,000 while in foal to Corinthian. Josham Farm, as agent, bought Keys to Heaven from Sam-Son Farm.
