Academy Award euthanized at 24

Academy Award, a Grade 2 winner and one of the last sons of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, was euthanized Tuesday at the Old Friends equine retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky., because of chronic hoof abscesses that had become debilitating.

Academy Award, 24, was a son of the Mr. Prospector winner Mine Only, making him a three-quarter brother to Grade 3 winner Statuette and a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Good Mood.

$280K Any Given Saturday filly boosts Ocala select session

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A $280,000 filly from Grade 1 winner Any Given Saturday’s first crop helped lift the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s August select yearling sale Tuesday in Ocala, Fla. The single select session ended the day with increases in gross, average, and median.

Jeff Bonde and Mersad Metanovic bought the Any Given Saturday filly, whose dam, the winning Prized mare Ricki S., is a full sister to Grade 1-winning millionaire Brass Hat. Beth Bayer, agent, was the seller.

Paragallo, Moore banned from registering horses with Jockey Club

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards has voted to deny Thoroughbred owner and breeder Ernie Paragallo and former trainer Chad Moore all privileges of The American Stud Book following their convictions on animal cruelty charges. The move prevents both men from registering Thoroughbred foals, but its effective date of Jan. 1, 2011, allows foals conceived before their convictions to be registered.

A number of horses previously owned by Paragallo and Moore are in the hands of equine rescue or animal shelter groups.

Foal crop expected to decline for sixth straight year in 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockey Club announced Saturday that it expects the registered North American Thoroughbred foal crop to fall again in 2011, to the smallest size since 1973.

The registry projects the 2011 registered foal crop to be 27,000, down 10 percent from the projected 2010 crop of 30,000. That will mark the sixth consecutive year of decline since the numbers reached a 12-year high of 38,358 in 2005. In 1973, the registered foal crop numbered 26,811.

OBS to combine its February and March sales

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company will consolidate its February and March select juvenile sales in 2011 into a single select 2-year-old auction March 15-16, the Ocala, Fla., company has announced.

That word comes as The Jockey Club forecasts continuing decline in the North American Thoroughbred foal crop. On Saturday, The Jockey Club projected that the 2011 registered foal crop would be 27,000, down 10 percent from the 2010 projected foal crop of 30,000. The North American foal crop has been falling since 2006, shrinking sale catalogs in recent years.

Barretts California Cup, Wygod dispersal catalogs available


Catalogs for the Barretts California Cup yearling sale and the complete dispersal of Pam and Marty Wygod’s West Coast breeding stock, both scheduled for October, are now online at www.barretts.com.

The dispersal from the Wygods’ River Edge Farm, is set for 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at Barretts in Pomona, Calif. It will include 61 mares and 35 foals born this year. All will sell without reserve. The Wygods were California’s leading breeders from 2006 to 2008 and have bred such Grade 1 winners as Idiot Proof, Key Phrase, Officer, and others.

Hedge Fund, full brother of Super Saver, retired from racing

Hedge Fund, the only full sibling to 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, has retired to WinStar Farm, the Lexington stud farm has announced.

A 7-year-old Maria’s Mon-Supercharger gelding, last ran on July 10 for Purple Haze Stables at Mountaineer Park, where he won an $8,800 claiming race by 12 lengths. That closed out Hedge Fund’s career with 5 wins and 23 placings from 57 lifetime starts and $160,699 in earnings. Chris J. Englehart was the gelding’s last trainer.

Maryland sire Citidancer euthanized after bout with laminitis

Longtime Maryland sire Citidancer was euthanized on Aug. 11 and has been buried at Country Life Farm, his home throughout his stud career, according to a notice on the Bel Air farm’s website.

Citidancer, a son of Dixieland Band, was 23 and was euthanized due to complications from laminitis. He had been pensioned from stud duty since the fall of 2005 after his fertility declined.

Fasig-Tipton to offer mares covered in Southern Hemisphere

Fasig-Tipton plans to catalog a group of broodmares in foal on Southern Hemisphere covers for its Nov. 7 breeding stock sale, the auction house announced Tuesday.

Fasig-Tipton officials say they are actively recruiting additional Southern Hemisphere-covered mares for the auction and will accept nominations through Aug. 31.
