Smart Strike colt, filly top Keeneland day

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A pair of $550,000 Smart Strike yearlings were the peak of the market Thursday at during a lively fifth session at Keeneland's September yearling sale.

The session ended Thursday evening with 197 yearlings grossing $23,234,000. The average price for the session was $117,939, and the median was $100,000. Session buy-backs were 30 percent.

Restraining order favors Lane's End Stallions

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Woodford County, Ky., Circuit Court judge has granted Lane’s End Stallions a temporary restraining order to prevent Ashley Andrews, a shareholder in classic winner and sire Lemon Drop Kid, and Robert Raphaelson, Andrews’s partner in a share of Kingmambo, from selling those shares to a group represented by California-based owner and breeder Jerry Jamgotchian.

Decline in number of foals reported

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Jockey Club has received live foal reports from North American breeders of 27,233 foals so far this year, a 14.2 percent decline compared with the number of live foal reports received by this time last year, the organization said on Thursday.

The number of live-foal reports dovetails with a foal-crop estimate released earlier this year by the Jockey Club. The estimate was for a 2010 foal crop of 30,000. Typically, by early September, the Jockey Club has received 90 percent of the live-foal reports it will receive for the entire crop.

Malibu Moon filly tops fourth session at $700,000

LEXINGTON, Ky.  -  A $700,000 Malibu Moon filly led selling Wednesday at the two-week Keeneland September yearling sale's fourth session on an afternoon that saw much upper-market activity from domestic shoppers.

Craig Lavin Bernick of Glen Hill Farm in Ocala, Fla., bought the session-topping daughter of Grade 3-placed Erhu from the Elm Tree Farm agency.

New breed taking hold

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Craig Lavin Bernick heralded a new era at Glen Hill Farm Wednesday when he bought a $700,000 Malibu Moon filly to lead the Keeneland September yearling sale’s fourth session in late afternoon.

Bernick, 31, is the grandson of the Ocala farm’s founder, 90-year-old Leonard Lavin. The elder Lavin, also founder of the Alberto-Culver company, announced two years ago that he was handing the reins to Bernick.

Malibu Moon filly brings $700,000 at Keeneland

Glen Hill Farm president Craig Lavin Bernick raised the bar Wednesday at day four of Keeneland's two-week September yearling sale.

Bernick paid $700,000 for Hip No. 658, a bay Malibu Moon filly out of Grade 3-placed Erhu, by Tactical Cat, giving the session a new leader by price.

Mr. and Mrs. Jody Huckabay's Elm Tree Farm agency consigned the filly.
