Life at Ten, Da' Tara among big names in November sales

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Dual Grade 1 winner Life at Ten, classic winner Da’ Tara, and a trio of Grade 1-performing mares are among top-class performers cataloged to the upcoming Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November breeding stock sales. The Keeneland sale starts Nov. 8 and ends on Nov. 20. The Fasig-Tipton sale runs Nov. 7-8.

Troutt and Casner dissolve WinStar Farm partnership

Five Adena stallions moving to New York

Five stallions owned by Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs will stand in 2011 at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in New York, the two farms announced on Wednesday.

The five stallions are Touch Gold, Alphabet Soup, Tiago, Harlem Rocker, and Silent Name, according to the farms. The stallions are being transferred from Adena’s Kentucky and Canada operations in advance of the installation of slot machines at Aqueduct racetrack in Queens sometime next spring. The machines are expected to generate approximately $30 million in annual purse subsidies for owners and breeders in the state.

Wygod dispersal tops first day of California Cup sale

The West Coast dispersal of broodmares, weanlings, and yearlings owned by Marty and Pam Wygod dominated Tuesday’s first day of the California Cup Yearling Sale at Barretts in Pomona, Calif.

The Wygods sold 88 broodmares and weanlings for $823,100, an average of $9,353, in an afternoon dispersal that started the two-day sale. During the first session of the yearling sale on Tuesday evening, a yearling Bertrando colt from the Wygod consignment sold for $105,000, the most expensive hip on the first day.

Cowan plans bloodstock dispersal

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Irving Cowan, who raced homebred champion Hollywood Wildcat with his late wife Marjorie, will disperse his bloodstock.

The dispersal will not include Hollywood Wildcat, whom Cowan will keep.

Robertson, senior auctioneer at Fasig-Tipton, retiring

Fasig-Tipton's chairman and senior auctioneer, Walt Robertson, will retire at the end of November after 35 years with the Kentucky-based auction house.

Robertson, 61, got his first job at Fasig-Tipton in 1975 as a bid-spotter and rose through the ranks, becoming company president in 1992. He was appointed chairman of Fasig-Tipton's board of advisers in 2008 after Dubai-based Synergy Investments acquired the company.

Pleasant Tap, champion of 1992, euthanized

Pleasant Tap, the champion older male of 1992 and the sire of a champion, was euthanized on Friday at Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., after contracting laminitis, the farm said on Monday. He was 23.

Quality Road to stand at Lane's End

Quality Road, one of the top contenders for the upcoming $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, will stand at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky., after making his final career start in that Nov. 6 race at Churchill Downs, it was jointly announced by the farm and by the 4-year-old colt’s breeder-owner, Edward P. Evans.

Quality Road has won 8 of 12 career starts for earnings of more than $2.2 million. He will remain Evans’ property, with a stud fee to be announced at a later date.

Careless Jewel retired, will be sold at F-T fall sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Careless Jewel, an 11-length winner of the Alabama Stakes last year, has retired from racing and will be offered in the Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale Nov. 7.

The select sale takes place at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency will consign the filly.
