Adena moving Olmodavor to California farm

Adena Springs will move its stallion Olmodavor from Ontario to California for the 2011 breeding season, the farm announced Monday.

An 11-year-old A. P. Indy horse, Olmodavor stood in Canada for about $5,000 and will stand for $5,000 at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Silver City, Jet Phone will stand at Valor Farm

Silver City, who spent some time on the Kentucky Derby trail in 2009, and Jet Phone, whose lone runner is multiple stakes winner Aces N Kings, will both be standing stud at Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas, in 2011.

Silver City retires with a record of 4 wins from 8 starts for earnings of $181,930. He won the Dixieland at Oaklawn in 2009, then was second to early Kentucky Derby favorite Old Fashioned in the track's Grade 3 Southwest. He is a son of Unbridled's Song and will stand for $2,000.

Unusual Suspect targets Cal Cup Classic

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The progeny of leading California stallion Unusual Heat have formed the basis of trainer Barry Abrams’s stable in the past few years, and may provide him with a milestone win in the $150,000 California Cup Classic at the Oak Tree at Hollywood Park meeting next Saturday.

Abrams is turning to the older veteran Unusual Suspect to win the biggest prize on a day for statebreds and further enhance Unusual Heat’s status in the state.

OBS mixed sale posts substantial gains all around

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s two-day fall mixed sale ended Wednesday with gains overall after the consignor-preferred session’s hefty increases offset slow selling at the open session.
The Ocala, Fla., sale sold 346 horses over the two days for $3,463,900, a 48-percent jump from last year’s combined $2,345,700 for 300 horses. The two-day average price climbed 28 percent, from $7,819 last season to $10,011, and the $5,000 median this year was up 19 percent from last year’s figure of $4,200.

Number of stallions, broodmares continues to shrink

LEXINGTON, Ky. – North American Thoroughbred breeding activity continued to decline in 2010, with 9 percent fewer active stallions and almost 11 percent fewer broodmares, according to statistics released Thursday by the Jockey Club.

The North American stallion population fell from 2,409 reported at this time last year to 2,186. During the same time period, the broodmare population dropped from 45,317 to 40,576.

Numbers down at final OBS session

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s fall mixed sale ended with across the board decreases at the Wednesday session, one day after the consignor-preferred session rang up gains at its consignor-preferred session.

Wednesday’s open session sold 180 horses for $863,700, down from the $877,800 gross for 168 horses last year. The average price in 2010 was $4,798, down from $5,225 last year, and median fell from $3,000 to $2,700. The buybacks dropped, too, however, falling to 35 percent from last season's 41 percent.

In a major development for the Canadian breeding industry, Frank Stronach is set to unveil his state-of-the-art stallion and breeding complex at his Adena Springs North in Aurora, Ontario, and introduce an impressive roster of stallions.
