New York Thoroughbred Breeders to host fundraising stallion season auction

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders will hold its annual fundraising stallion season auction Feb. 3-7 at Starquine.com. The sale will feature seasons to stallions standing in Kentucky, New York, and other areas, including Benny the Bull, Catienus, Freud, Henny Hughes, and numerous others. Domestic Dispute to stand at Indiana Stallion Station

Grade 2 winner Domestic Dispute, sire of four stakes-placed runners, will stand at the Indiana Stallion Station in Anderson, Ind., this year. His fee will be $2,000.

In 2010, Domestic Dispute stood at the Northview Stallion Station, also for $2,000.

The 11-year-old Unbridled’s Song horse sold to Gayle Gerth’s Dana Point Farm for $40,000 at the recent Keeneland January sale, and he will stand at the Indiana Stallion Station as the property of Dana Point.

Don't Get Mad relocating to Elite Thoroughbreds in Louisiana

Spendthrift Farm stallion Don’t Get Mad will relocate to Elite Thoroughbreds in Folsom, La., in 2011, the Louisiana farm has announced.

From two racing-age crops, Don’t Get Mad’s best runner to date, by earnings, is Louisiana Futurity winner Populist Politics, a son of the Souvenir Copy mare Cedar Summer. He earned $88,095 as a juvenile in 2010.

Don’t Get Mad, advertised most recently at Spendthrift with a $3,000 stud fee, will stand at Elite Thoroughbreds for $2,000.

Pulpit filly leads Keeneland sale Friday at $40,000

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Another Pulpit daughter led selling Friday at the Keeneland January sale’s last session. Poetfromthepulpit, a 3-year-old filly out of stakes-placed Kivi, brought $40,000 from agent Carlos Moore as top-priced horse at 3 p.m.

Vinery, agent, consigned the bay filly, who finished second once in three starts in Canada and has earned $11,605. Poetfromthepulpit sold as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Unusual Heat on top in California once again

The Usual Q.T. was Unusual Heat's top earner for 2010.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Unusual Heat extended his streak of annual titles as California’s leading stallion by progeny earnings to three in 2010, but his earnings dipped compared to the past two years.

In 2010, progeny of Unusual Heat earned $4,342,128, well clear of runner-up Stormin Fever, with $3,254,053. Benchmark ($2,903,594), the late Salt Lake ($2,402,845), and In Excess ($2,213,435) rounded out the first five.

Unusual Heat’s 2010 figure was well shy of his 2008 earnings of $5,827,513, a record for a California-based stallion, or his 2009 figure of $5,184,194.

Pulpit mare brings $110,000 at Keeneland sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland’s January all-ages sale remained on the upswing Thursday after its fourth session, the auction’s penultimate day.

Through Thursday, the auction had sold 849 horses for a combined $24,354,850, a 7 percent increase over last season’s aggregate for 816 horses at the same stage. The four-day average also was up, by 3 percent, to $28,687, and the median price of $10,000 was the same as last year’s figure.

The 2011 sale’s cumulative buyback rate also was level with last year’s figure of 26 percent.

Valerio's got an eye for talent

LEXINGTON, Ky. − The Factor’s recent record-setting maiden win at Santa Anita opened a lot of eyes, but not Kim Valerio’s.

Valerio, 42, thought the War Front colt could be special much earlier, back when he was a yearling in search of a buyer. Valerio spotted him at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky’s July select yearling sale in 2009. When he failed to reach his reserve price in the auction ring, she bought him privately for $40,000.
